HUNTING FOR CALICO BASS - AKA the kelp bass and bull bass, is a very tasty part of the grouper family and rarely get larger than 28. We all shot personal best ...Calico’s on our recent trip with Zenmar Offshore Action. Hunting large calicos is a blast and requires a bit of technique. They really like to hide under overhangs in fairly shallow water, so you need to find a ledge that is potentially holding one and dive down about 20’ before the ledge, slowly and calmly swim as hidden as possible toward the overhang and have your gun ready. Swim under the overhang (if possible) until you see a larger one and then get ready because they spook easily! Almost all the larger calicos turned broadside for less than one second and then bolted, so we really had to use that quick aim and trigger pull the moment we saw it, otherwise, we likely would not find it again. PB Goat @thegregarious1 - The California sheep head (Semicossyphus pulcher) is a species of wrasse native to the eastern Pacific Ocean. Its range is from Monterey Bay, California, to the Gulf of California. For this reason it is one of our targeted species on spearfishing charters. This species can live for up to 20 years in favorable conditions and can reach a size of up to 3ft and 35 lb. They are carnivorous, living in rocky reef and kelp bed habitats, feeding primarily on sea urchins, molluscs, and crustaceans (this is why they taste a lot like lobster). FUN FACT: all CA Sheephead are born female and morph into male at some point in their life depending on environmental conditions and pressures! #eatwhatyoukill #spearfishing #freediving #spearo #zenmar
