Happy and joyous Rohatsu to all fellow Buddhist around the globe. Rohatsu is Japanese for "eighth day of the twelfth month." December 8 has come to be the day Japanese Zen Buddhists observe the enlightenment of the historical Buddha. Sesshin is held each year in Zen monasteries throughout the world to commemorate this event, which occurred when Shakyamuni Buddha saw a star at dawn on the eighth day of his retreat. We manifest the Buddha’s determination as he sat beneath the Bodhi tree, vowing not to rise until he achieved true awakening. Every student contributes to and takes strength from the powerful energy and determination of all, creating an unsurpassed opportunity for deep practice and realization.

If we are not careful with our practice, we can use spiritual refuge to cover up our distress at injustice. Grace’s Japanese Zen teacher, Keido Fukushima Roshi, explained Zen’s fundamental practice as Watching your own mind. He emphasized this teaching as the most important thing we can do. From this perspective we can check up on our impulses to intervene. We need to be emotionally intelligent and efficient especially when asking for systemic change. How do we bring forth social justice without exacerbating anger and hatred in ourselves or others? Grace will offer techniques for watching your mind and knowing its tricks in service of right action. Grace Schireson is a Zen Abbess, in the Suzuki Roshi lineage empowered by Sojun Mel Weitsman. She is president of Shogaku Zen Institute, a Clinical Psychologist (Wright Institute in Berkeley, CA), and founded two practice and retreat centers under the Central Valley Zen Foundation. Her books include, ‘Naked in the Zendo: Stories of Uptight Zen, Wild-Ass Zen, and Enlightenment Wherever You Are,’ ‘Zen Women: Beyond Tea Ladies, Iron Maidens and Macho Masters,’ and edited ‘Zen Bridge: The Zen Teachings of Keido Fukushima,’ along with articles in leading Buddhist magazines.
