The Summer Arabic Intensive, a residential language program, was its first academic offering, and the undergraduate program welcomed its inaugural freshman class in fall 2010. In March 2015, Zaytuna earned accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, becoming the first accredited Muslim college in the United States. "These are indeed strange times: our authorities are telling us to wash several times a day, a lot of frivolous entertainment has been cancelled, bars have been shut down, interest rates are at zero, and the president of the United States is telling us to pray. In other words, for Muslims, this means keep practicing your religion!" For those that haven't seen it, on Monday, March 16, the President of Zaytuna College, Sh. Hamza Yusuf announced that Zaytuna College has closed its campus with classes having been moved online until further notice. The full message can be read in full here: https://zaytuna.edu/articles/presidentsmessage-march2020 The Bookstore will continue to operate and fulfil online orders. It will not, however, be opened for public access. We wish for everyone to stay safe and extra vigilant in these strange times.

What is the ‘negro’? Who qualifies? What is its Arabic equivalent? And, what did pre-modern writers mean by it? There is a common belief that the ‘negro’ refers to any black person of sub-Saharan heritage. Historians, however, often differentiate between the Moor, the Nubian, the Ethiopian, the Kushite, and the Negro. Why this distinction if all black Africans and those of African heritage presumably belong to a common pedigree? Dr. Abdullah bin Hamid Ali’s book The ‘Negro’ in Arab-Muslim Consciousness is available in-store and online.
