We are growing over 5,000 Joshua trees from seed this year and plan to grow at least 10,000 next season. They grow very slowly and are susceptible to ground squirrels, rabbits, ravens, insects and fungus. The ones that survive all that need just the right soil mix and watering schedule, which must be adapted weekly.
On the way home from Manzanar, a shiny Yucca Brevifolia caught my eye.. Turned out to be a sculpture by J.P. Gorman, welded with horse shoes and tent stakes, it appears.
Look for more information on our recent involvement in the restoration of an elevated Japanese Garden at Manzanar. This a 16 foot Joshua tree that we adopted from a site in Hesperia, Ca. and transplanted at Manzanar in Independence, Ca.
