It’s the season for fawns, bunnies, baby rattlesnakes, and a whole world of newborn life. Although you may be out enjoying the sunshine and the baby animals may be cute or even look abandoned the Yreka Animal Control Department wants to remind the public that the best approach is not to approach baby animals. Many species, including deer, will leave their young for short periods of time while looking for food nearby, but even if you think an animal is abandoned it may not... be. If you think an animal is injured or needs assistance, you can contact the Yreka Police Department (530) 841-2300 to notify dispatch of the injured animal. Late spring and early summer are the peak time for California’s wildlife to have their young. We are issuing a reminder to well-intentioned people to not interact with young wildlife even if they find an animal that appears to be abandoned. Thank you for keeping your dog(s) on a 6-foot leash or smaller when walking in the parks to keep them from disturbing the wildlife. See more

It’s that time of year again! With hot weather approaching we ask all animal owners to keep their animals safe and don’t leave them in a vehicle unattended. Bottom line, there is a law for a reason. Penal Code 597.7 (a) a person shall not leave or confine an animal in any unattended motor vehicle under conditions that endanger the health or well-being of an animal due to heat, cold, lack of adequate ventilation, or lack of food or water, or other circumstances that could reas...onably be expected to cause suffering, disability, or death to the animal. We do not want to see animals suffer in hot cars. -is the dog showing signs of distress? (Excessive panting, tongue turning dark purple, behaving frantically, loss of bowels, lethargic) -Summon help if the vehicle is parked near a business to have the owner of the car paged. -call us at (530)841-2300 or 911 if the situation appears urgent. The law is the law, but we are trained to read the animals and must follow protocol before any action is done. For us to gain access in the vehicle without the owner being present the animal(s) must show signs of being very distressed (Excessive panting, tongue turning dark purple, behaving frantically, loss of bowels, lethargic), or appears to be lifeless. We have tools that makes it easy to break a window, and we would prefer to be the ones to take on that responsibility and liability. It is also a good idea to document the current conditions, and photograph or video of the situation before you act. We are big animal lovers and people that choose to leave their dog in a hot car will be facing a criminal charge of Animal Neglect at the very least, and perhaps a broken window. Hope that clears things up! Please leave the animals at home!
