It was an eventful morning at YMCA Camp Surf! A fire outside of camp ignited a palm tree which then, due to high winds, blew burning embers onto camp. Those embers lit the berm next to the team building area on fire and it was spreading west towards the main part of camp. Thanks to the quick work from Coronado Fire Department, Imperial Beach Fire Dept, San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, Federal Fire, and all the first responders involved, no structures were damaged and the fire was put out before it spread further. We are immensely grateful!
The surf forecast called for 5-star waves this morning...it wasn't wrong!
It's no secret that 2020 has been tough on all of us. But today, on this #givingtuesday, and throughout our Annual Campaign, the YMCA of #SanDiegoCounty aims to raise over $4.5M to put back into the San Diego community. We can't do this without your support. Join us on this global day of giving and make an impact in our community. Let's ensure that our overnight camps can continue to provide positive, life-changing experiences in the outdoors for generations to come! https://give.classy.org/ymcasdcamps
Happy Thanksgiving! We are thankful for you and your continued support.
Unfortunately the Halloween Carnival isn’t in the cards for this year, but let’s take a look back at some of the fun staff costumes from 2019’s festivities! Have a safe and fun Halloween everyone!
Throwback to the final "Evening Staff Surf" of Summer 2020! Thanks again to this amazing team!
Too much screen time getting you down? Reserve a cabin for your family at YMCA Camp Surf this fall and retreat to the beach! For details and availability visit www.ymcasd.org/surf-retreat
Former camper and Camp Surf Lifeguard Ryan Petersen was recently featured by California State Lifeguards after making a very dangerous and daring rescue, through heavy surf, in Big Sur, CA. Great work, Ryan! FUN FACT: Ryan was introduced to ocean lifeguarding through YMCA Camp Surf's Junior Lifeguard Day Camp program!
Throwback to Summer 2015 and this epic late drop! If the saying is true that "the best surfer out there is the one having the most fun" then we're certain, at that moment in time...he was the best surfer out there!
Friday Fun Fact - sticking out your tongue while trying something new or doing something difficult can actually help you focus!
A huge "Thank You" to everyone who helped make summer 2020 at YMCA Camp Surf a success! The staff, campers, parents, board members, supporters, and donors all deserve a huge pat on the back! Despite the challenging times, we worked together to serve our community and stayed true to our mission.
The end of Session 9 marks the end of Summer 2020 and one of the most meaningful summers in the history of YMCA Camp Surf. Our staff team worked harder than ever before to create a safe, and much needed, social environment for our local campers and their families. While we are sad that we were not able to run our traditional overnight camp experiences, we are beyond proud of our staff and every one of the 974 day campers we served this summer.
Session 8 saw sunny days, big waves, and much needed outdoor adventures with new friends.
Session 7 campers made the most of their time at the beach by surfing, body boarding, body surfing, or building epic sand sculptures. It was business as usual!
Quote from a Session 6 Camper Parent - "We're so thankful for the safe, outdoor fun the YMCA is able to provide this summer. He's actually been too tired to hop on a screen when he gets home!"
Our entire family loved YMCA Camp Surf. We learned to surf, conquered new heights on the climbing tower, got crafty with tie dye and devoured s’mores on the beach. We had a blast. The YMCA team is doing a great job. We felt so safe and for a couple days almost forgot about COVID. Book your Family Retreat and join in the adventure! www.ymcasd.org/surf
