Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that users will be able to turn off political advertisements on the social networking site in a June 17 op-ed for USA Tod...ay. Although not immediately available to all, some users will be able to turn off ads for ‘all social issues [and] electoral or political ads from candidates’ starting Wednesday. The feature, which will also be available on Instagram, will roll out more widely across the U.S. in ‘the next few weeks,’ according to The Verge. In the op-ed, Zuckerberg also introduced a new campaign called the Voting Information Center, which will include information about ‘how and when to vote, as well as details about voter registration, voting by mail and information about early voting.’ ‘This work is sorely needed: We surveyed adults in the United States, and more than half said they believe people will need more information on how to vote in November than in previous elections,’ Zuckerberg wrote. Zuckerberg also acknowledged that Facebook was ‘slow to identify foreign interference’ on the platform during the 2016 election and said the company has since invested ‘billions of dollars in technology’ and hired ‘tens of thousands of people to work on safety and security.’ Facebook continues to not fact-check political advertisements on its site.
