Remember that no legitimate company is going to contact you and tell you about Computer viruses on your computer. Your antivirus software should notify you but you will not have a pop up on a webpage telling you about viruses. This is a common scam. Do not call a phone number, or reply to an unsolicited email listed on such a site. Close your browser, and open it again.

Please be aware when you have a message from something other than your anti-virus software that says you have viruses or malware on your computer, that is is most likely a scam. This scam will tell you that you need to call a number to fix the issue. Many times it will appear to come from Microsoft, but it does not. Microsoft does not scan your computer for viruses. There is no legitimate company out there that will scan your computer without your prior consent. I have seen this over and over again. Do not call the number, close your browser and open it up again. This will usually take care of the issue.

Though I am not currently doing computer repairs, I want to keep this page open to continue to give good information about computer systems and those dreaded scammers. Look for updates from time to time, I write usually when I find a new scam circulating the internet or have some cool, legal hack.

Here is an easy way to tell a computer scam. If anyone calls you, unsolicited and tells you that you have a virus on your computer, this is a scam. Get their information, DO NOT LET THEM LOG IN ON YOUR COMPUTER!!!, and call the police with the phone number, the person's name, what company they claim to represent, the time they called and if they had an Indian, or Philipino accent. DO NOT GIVE THEM ANY CREDIT CARD INFORMATION! There is not a legitimate company that will call you to tell you of a virus or a trojan on your computer unsolicited.

When you are surfing the web, if you come across a site that is a scam or is used for criminal enterprises, you can find who owns the site or the range of IP addresses by using this link: http://ping.eu/ns-whois/ This site will bring up who owns the name, who owns the IP address range that the site is hosted on, ect. Usually there is an email where you can report such sites, or misconduct from a site. You can report the site to the ISP (Internet Service Provider) as abusing their privileges by sending an email. If you are not sure if the information in the record is a scam I recommend emailing from an email address you don't care about. You can help other from being taken advantage of by reporting such sites. Perhaps I will do a youtube video showing how to do this in the near future.

THIS IS A SCAM! If this site comes up on your computer, close the tab and cancel the dialog box. DO NOT CALL THE NUMBER!!! This site is hosted in Singapore and is only wanted to scare you into giving them your money. Microsoft will never call you to alert you to an infection on your computer, especially if you are running Linux as I happen to be. I have alerted the ISP hosting the website about the nature of the site. Don't fall for this scam.

Warning!!! Be on the lookout for a scam claiming to be "PC-Tech." If you get a call from them to work on your computer do not give them access, they are a SCAM! First they look for an issue on your computer and fix it, then later call back saying they can no longer do Business in your state and want to refund your money. DO NOT GIVE THEM ANY ACCOUNT INFORMATION! If they really want to give you money then have them send you a check for the amount of the refund. These are the phone numbers they use (214)838-1975 from DallasTX, and (234)755-6869 from Mantua OH. Please pass this on.

If you have a computer that is running slow, there are several things to check. One, are there programs running in the background that are making the computer slow? Two, does the computer have enough memory to run the operating system. It is usually best the have at least the recommended amount of ram to run your version of windows. Three, do you have a nearly full hard drive. Windows usually will show you when you are running out of hard drive space. Four, have you defragmen...ted the hard drive lately. If the hard drive has not been defragmented lately, it will make the computer run slow as it will have to search for the fragments of the files it is retrieving from the drive. By default it is usually set to do this at some time after midnight once a week. If you do not have your computer on during that time the defragment program will not run. Once you have check these, then you may have to run a virus scan, but these are the usual suspects. See more

Get ready for the next few videos. I am working my way through all the prerequisites to port forwarding. In the next video, I will show you how to find your internal IP address. Things begin to get interesting here as there are so many things you can do with that knowledge. This page and the Owens Computering Youtube channel are tailor made for those that find themselves less comfortable with computer. I will take you step by step through basic and maybe some no so basic comp...uter tasks. Computers are not hard to learn. It just takes time and determination, just like anything else. If you have any questions or you are a little confused, go ahead as ask. I want to raise the level of basic understanding of computers because it bothers me when I hear of people getting ripped off from computer scams or unscrupulous computer repair technicians. This does not have to be you, with a little knowledge you can save hundreds or maybe thousands of dollars. Let me know how I can help you. See more

I had a computer issue that prevented me from getting the last video out by Wednesday. That is a funny thing for a computer repair guy to say, but the charger that I had stopped working and I ordered a new one. I just got that in yesterday. I plan to spend some time finishing the video tomorrow and perhaps a little Sunday afternoon. This video will showcase a tool I use in my 9-5 job and in my computer repair business.
