On this #MedicalMonday - The WunderGlo Foundation explores how CEA can also become elevated due to skin inflammation, including the infamous Xeloda-induced hand foot syndrome. Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) is recognized as being important not only as a tumor marker, but also as a cell adhesion molecule in the metastasis of malignant tumor cells, and in the development of inflammatory disorders in some organs. However, the role played by this antigen in inflammatory dermatose...s has not been studied previously. To investigate the expression of CEA in inflamed skin, scientists performed immunohistochemical studies to detect the antigen in both frozen and formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded biopsy specimens of inflammatory dermatoses, using five different monoclonal antibodies and one polyclonal antibody against human CEA or CEA-related molecules. CEA and CEA-related antigens were expressed by epidermal keratinocytes and by some infiltrating inflammatory cells in inflamed skin. The expression was observed primarily in the upper part of the malpighian layers of the epidermis. On the basis of the distribution of this expression, we suggest an additional role for CEA-related molecules, differing from their roles as tumour markers and adhesion molecules, namely that these molecules may be associated with the state of differentiation of epidermal keratinocytes. Unexpected expression of CEA-related antigens was seen on normal follicular keratinocytes. Thus, it is conceivable that CEA-related antigen may also play a role in the biology of hair follicles. What this means is that minor CEA elevation (up to 25) is not necessarily related to tumor progression. #MedicalMonday #ElevatedCEA #SkinRash #HandFootSyndrome #Inflammation #WunderGlo Photo: Advanced case of hand foot syndrome induced by prolonged Xeloda use

Happy #GloriasFriday from WunderGlo! Today's shared post is in honor of Father's Day approaching this upcoming Sunday. Our founder writes about her time at the hospital and how her dad always did his best to make her feel relaxed and safe. This post is entitled "Happy Father's Day". "My dad would stay up all night with me, between the hours of midnight and 7am, rubbing my shoulders, arms, and hands, playing soothing music for me (the Vitamin String Quartet's rendition of Rad...iohead's Kid A, the soundtrack to my favorite movie (Shadowlands), and Fleetwood Mac were some favorites), and guiding me through meditations that relaxed me, took my mind away from my physical body, and gently guided me to sleep. He told me about sandy beaches and crashing waves and about beautiful mountaintops and fresh alpine air. And when I finally fell asleep for that hour or so, he held my hand the whole time. Just feeling my dad's big, warm hand enveloping mine made me feel relaxed, safe, and, thankfully, sleepy. I don't know what I would have done without my dad during those weeks at Washington Hospital Center, because it was precisely that rest I gave my body that comprised the bedrock of my unyieldingly fast and complication-free recovery." "This Father's Day, I honor my dad for everything he's done for me -- from teaching me how to swim when I was a little one (which has been very handy considering my new daily exercise), to making the most delicious vegan snacks for me (his guacamole is to die for), to always giving me world-class back/hand/foot rubs no matter what time of day it is (especially during my Benadryl-induced chemo naps and after crazy workouts). And for heroically holding my hand when I need him to." We hope that you all have a happy and safe Father's Day weekend. http://www.wunderglo.com/bl/2011/6//happy-fathers-day.html #GloriasFriday #FathersDay

This #MedicalMonday - WunderGlo considers the relationship between sugary drinks and colon cancer. High consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB) in adolescence and young adulthood could partially explain the recent rapid rise in early-onset colorectal cancer (EO-CRC) at least in women, according to the authors of a new analysis. The study found that women who recalled drinking two or more SSB per day in young adulthood had a twofold increase in the risk of colorectal... cancer before the age of 50, compared to those who had only one such drink per week or less. However, experts warn that these findings are based on small numbers and do not prove a causal effect. "Despite these limitations, this signal keeps appearing over and over again," notes Marcus DaSilva Goncalves, MD, PhD, at the Meyer Cancer Center, Department of Medicine, Weill Cornell Medicine, New York City, who was approached for comment. "There is strong evidence in mice and supportive epidemiologic studies that back the link between fructose-containing sugars and obesity, diabetes, and certain cancers like CRC," he said. The issue is certainly of great interest. CRC has been considered a disease of the elderly, but there has been a dramatic increase in recent years in the incidence of CRC in younger adults the United States as well as other high-income countries. #sugaryfoods #consumption #crc #correlation #youngeronsetcancer #MedicalMonday #WunderGlo Study: https://gut.bmj.com/content/early//05/09/gutjnl-2020-323450
