El Anatsui is a Ghanaian sculptor active for much of his career in Nigeria. He initially worked in the traditional materials of clay and wood, but is best-known for pieces made out of flattened bottle caps and pieces of foil from liquor bottles. He weaves these together with copper wire to create what look like enormous shimmering tapestries, evoking the softness of Ghanaian and Nigerian textiles. The artist folds these pieces for travel, and when unrolled they do not automat...ically assume their original shapes. He wishes for those who are hanging his works to restructure them, implementing what he calls a nomadic aesthetic. The bottle caps are a reminder of the liquor that European traders began bringing to Africa centuries ago, and can be seen as a reference to trade and the very beginnings of globalization. The artist also says that they have an association with spirituality and healing, as many African cultures use liquor for prayers and libations. For over 50 years, Roger Shimomura has been creating art that challenges America’s attitudes toward immigrants. Born in Seattle in 1939, during WWII he and his family were forced to spend over two years in Japanese internment camps, an experience that continues to inform his work. In the 1960s Shimomura discovered Pop Art and the California Funk movement, and their irreverent attitude and visual style are still evident in his pieces today. He paints in a flat, comic book styl...e, combining images of American pop culture with stereotypical images of Asians wartime Japs, geishas, and martial artists. Shimomura often inserts portraits of himself, for example putting his own face on the body of George Washington, giving an Asian face to one of America’s most revered figures. His intent is to make us think about how we, as Americans, perceive these types of imagery. Shahzia Sikander is an award-winning Pakistani-American artist. She was trained in the demanding technique of Indo-Persian miniature painting at the National College of Arts in Lahore, Pakistan, where she won acclaim both for technical mastery and for her transformation of the traditional medium. By playing with scale and introducing new subjects and media, she launched what has come to be called Neo-Miniature painting. Sikander moved to the US in 1993 to complete her MFA a...t the Rhode Island School of Design. In 2001 she began to work in animation and video, and in the past several years, she has completed several large public commissions, most recently a 28-foot fountain mosaic in Houston, TX. Her pieces weave together iconography from South Asian, Muslim, and American contexts to comment on issues of language, colonialism, gender, and identity. The artist’s work questions the arbitrariness of boundaries of all kinds, arguing that ideas such as tradition and culture are forever in flux. Silpa Bhirasri Day In Thailand September 15 is celebrated as Silpa Bhirasri day. Silpa Bhirasri is the Thai name of Italian sculptor Corrado Feroci, who is considered the father of modern art in Thailand. Born in 1892, Bhirasri studied at the Royal Academy of Florence, and taught there from 1914 1923. There was a history of cultural exchange between Italy and the kingdom of Siam (Siam became Thailand in 1939), and in 1923 Bhirasri was invited by King Rama VI to work as a s...culptor for the Siamese government. Enchanted by the Thai people and culture, Bhirasri never left, and in 1944 officially became a Thai citizen. He was instrumental in establishing the Academy of Fine Arts, which would become Silpakorn University, the first university of the fine arts in Thailand. In 1930 Bhirasri created this statue of King Rama I for the 150th anniversary of his ascension to the throne. See more
