Today the Woodland Opera House highlights the love story of Bob Cooner and Matthew Abergel. In December of 1996, Bob and Matthew met at a holiday party in Chicago. They were introduced by a mutual friend, though Matthew had seen Bob on stage before that. This past Valentine’s Day the couple celebrated their 24th anniversary. They were legally married in October 2008. Bob and Matthew have shared many adventures at the Woodland Opera House. Their collaborative projects inc...lude: Once Upon a Mattress (2004-05 season) -- This was the first show Bob directed at the Woodland Opera House. Matthew played the role of the Wizard. Man of La Mancha (2005-06 season) -- Bob directed and Matthew played The Duke/Dr. Carrassco. Coincidentally, Matthew’s dad became critically ill during the show’s run and Bob had to step into the role for the last weekend. Noises Off (2009-10 season) -- Bob directed and Matthew played Freddie Fellowes/Philip Brent. Second-Best Bed (2013-14 season) -- Bob directed the world-premiere of this show, whose script was written by Matthew. Miracle on 34th Street: The Musical (2015-16 season) -- Bob directed and Matthew played District Attorney Thomas Mara. Prime Time for the Holidays (2016-17 season) -- Matthew directed this world-premiere while Bob penned the script (with original songs and arrangements by Sam Schieber). Guys and Dolls (2016-17 season) -- This is the only show Matthew and Bob have performed in together--Matthew as Lt. Brannigan and Bob as Arvide Abernathy. Blithe Spirit (2017-18 season) -- Bob directed and Matthew played Charles Condomine. A Christmas Carol: A Play for Live Radio (December 2020) -- Bob adapted Charles Dickens’ story into a radio-show format and directed, while Matthew played a wide variety of characters, including Bob Cratchit. Before COVID hit, Bob was set to direct The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Matthew was on board as director of Lend Me a Tenor for the Woodland Opera House’s 2020-2021 season. They’re looking forward to bringing these stories to life once we can safely gather again at the theatre. Bob and Matthew have also co-written a new play, The Ghost of Woodland Opera House, expressly for Opera House audiences. Hopefully, it will see a full production in the not-too-distant future. Head down the yellow brick road with the Woodland Opera House Young Adult Performers! "The Wizard of Oz, a Modern New Play" debuts March 6 and 7! In this faithful and playfully short adaptation of the original novel, Dorothy lands in Oz and must find her way home to Kansas. But first she must find the yellow brick road, make it through the poppy field, avoid the flying monkeys, and defeat the Wicked Witch. No big deal. Luckily she has the Scarecrow, Tin Man, Cowardly Lion, a...nd Glinda the Good Witch on her side. There are some surprises along the way in this faithful adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s classic story. "Musical Theatre Dance (Virtual)" begins SATURDAY! There is still time to register! One of our most popular classes is getting a makeover! This fall 2020 session will be focusing on learning choreography from musicals produced in the 80’s and 90’s!! Our Teen/Adult Musical Theatre class is designed to help dancers of ALL skill levels gain necessary skills to increase confidence for local dance auditions. Introducing each dancer to a different style weekly in an easy and approa...chable format, this class is designed for dancers to learn a small mock audition dance to help build retention skills in a short time frame. Don’t have much experience with dance? That’s okay! Feedback is given weekly to assist each dancer in becoming more confident and ready to tackle any future audition, regardless of dance experience. Theatres may be on pause, but this is the PERFECT time to brush up on your skills to be ready to hit the ground running once theatre makes its comeback! Styles covered: theatre jazz, ballet, lyrical, contemporary, hip-hop, Fosse jazz, and more (Tap will make a comeback once we are back in-studio.) Classes will be held on ZOOM.
