A series of shoulder flossers to help unwind the soft tissue in and around the shoulder blades. There are a few shoulder strengtheners towards the end, which start to activate some of the back muscles that help rotate the blades down and away from the neck. For example, the rhomboids, latissimus dorsi, levator scapulae (along with others) help pull the blades away from the neck and together (towards the spine); this allows the shoulder blades to push into the back of the rib ...cage thus, allowing a lift in the chest cavity and more space in the diaphragm for the heart and lungs. These muscles are overstretched and weak on must people, which in turn results in shoulder and neck pain over time. Do one, do a couple or all of them, but do note that consistency is the key. TODAY'S SESSION: 8/13/20 -How emotions are processed by the brain and what role yoga plays in this process? -Recommended book, The Body Keeps The Score. -Recommended supplement, Nutritional Yeast.... THE SCIENCE: Sensory stimuli comes in through eyes, nose, ears, skin, and goes first to the Thalamus. Here all the information is put together like an autobiographical soup, and then is sent to two different places, Amygdala (unconscious mind), or the fight or flight system, and the Prefrontal Cortex (conscious mind), or watchtower. If there is no threat, the information is sent to the Hippocampus where it is categorized. In other words, the hippocampus is where new stimuli and past experiences are weaved together. *If the Amygdala senses a threat, it skips the hippocampus and sends signals straight to the Hypothalamus (and brain stem); this is where stress hormones (Cortisol & Adrenaline) are sent to the autonomic nervous system (ANS) to increase heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing to activate the flight or flight system. THE SCIENCE OF YOGA: How does yoga play a role in the process of receiving stimuli? Well, as you may of noticed much of what we see is intertwined with past experiences. Yoga uses breathe, alignment, and sound to bring one's self into the present, i.e., quieting the mind and calming the nervous system. This allows the Amygdala and Hypothalamus to relax the overuse of these tissues. As I like to say, calm your tissues and your issues. With the consistent practice of yoga (or calming of thoughts), we start to restructure the way we interpret stimuli which in turn calms the nervous system. The calming of the nervous system is ultimately the place of peace. This takes times and patients.
