February 19, 1942. Never to be forgotten.

Today marks Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the 40-day Season of Lent within the Christian community. Historically, Lent has been a time of thoughtful reflection on our own mortality, recognizing our sins, and seeking repentance in order to grow closer to God through Christ. Traditionally, people have chosen to "give up" something sweet in their lives to be in solidarity with Jesus' suffering during his arrest, trials, and death. For many of us, though, it feels like we have ...been living through a whole year of Lent, beginning last March when Covid-19 required us to give up shopping, going to movies and concerts, and gathering in-person with loved ones. We may not be inclined to "give up" anything more than we already have, and that is completely understandable. While some people may find traditional Lenten disciplines still hold meaning this year, for others, perhaps adding something to life may be a more fruitful Christian disciple. Rather than abstaining from life's pleasures, maybe we can add joy to other's lives by sending a greeting card, making a phone call, dropping off a flowering plant, or mailing a small gift. We know that Covid-19 has also spread a pandemic of loneliness. During this Lenten season, perhaps we can focus on the "together" part of our church's mission statement: Growing More Christlike Together, by safely reaching out and intentionally connecting with members of our church family. In so doing, may we serve as the hope of Christ in someone's life. With prayers for a meaningful Lent.
