According to the story that has been passed down about Shinran Shonin’s life, these were the profound words he expounded as a 9-year old child outside the gates of Mt. Hiei. He was dropped off to the monastery by his relatives late in the evening, and the monk, who was a gatekeeper, told him it was too late to be admitted and to return the next day. It is said that Shinran recited these words; the monk was so impressed, that Shinran Shonin was allowed in immediately.
