How much do you know about Ortho-K? Orthokeratology (ortho-k) is the fitting of specially designed gas permeable contact lenses that you wear overnight. While you are asleep, the lenses gently reshape the front surface of your eye. so you can see clearly the following day after you remove the lenses when you wake up. Ortho-k lenses are maily prescribed for two purposes:... 1.To correct refractive errors, and it's primarily for nearsightedness and astigmatism. In some cases, ortho-k also is used to correct presbyopia. 2.To slow down and stop the progression of childhood nearsightedness (myopia). You should be able to see acceptably well without glasses or contact lenses for a day or two, sometimes longer. For best results, you should wear the Ortho-k lenses every night. There is no age restriction for Ortho-K treatment. Ortho-k overnight lenses are ideal for most athletic activities, especially for sports where the ability to see without glasses or contact lenses. These sports include: archery, baseball, basketball, boxing, climbing, cycling, diving, football, golf, gymnastics, hockey, hunting, martial arts, motorcycle racing, racket ball, shooting sports, softball, skiing, snowboarding, soccer, surfing, swimming, water polo, tennis and wrestling. How much do you know about Lazy Eye? It's important and critical for early detection and treatment. The American Optometric Association recommends that all children have their first eye exam at 6 months of age, another exam at age 3 and a third exam prior to entering school to ensure vision is developing normally in both eyes and there is no risk of amblyopia. Call us for free phone consultation@626-363-4991 Wise Optometry Amblyopia, also known as lazy eye, is a vision de...velopment disorder in which an eye fails to achieve normal visual acuity, even with prescription eyeglasses or contact lenses. Amblyopia begins during infancy and early childhood. In most cases, only one eye is affected. But in some cases, reduced visual acuity can occur in both eyes. Particularly if lazy eye is detected early in life and promptly treated, reduced vision can be avoided. Amblyopia will not go away on its own, and untreated lazy eye can lead to permanent visual problems. If later in life your child's stronger eye develops disease or is injured, he or she will depend on the poor vision of the amblyopic eye, so it is best to treat amblyopia early on. It's estimated that about 2 to 3 percent of the U.S. population has some degree of amblyopia. In some cases, uncorrected refractive errors and amblyopia in young children can lead to behaviors that seem to indicate developmental or other disorders when the problem is purely visual. In March 2012, Emmelyn Roettger of Washington, D.C., was accepted into Mensa, the high-IQ society, as the youngest member ever at almost 3 years old. But when she was aged 9 months, she wasn't crawling or reaching for objects, and her doctors wondered if she had a form of autism. -AllAboutVision.com See more
