Words matter. Saying that doing a beach clean up, or skipping a plastic straw is saving the sea or cleaning the ocean is the everyone-gets-a-trophy approach that stifles the opportunity to expand children's understanding of the environment and their rightful role in protecting it. It's a BPA-Free liner though, so it's okay, right? No. Sorry! What about juiceboxes, baby-food pouches, boxed liquids, food in squeezy-tubes??? Sorry, sorry, sorry sorry.... We're sorry that industry values profits over safety. It always has (remember cigarettes?). But glass is too expensive! Glass is not kid friendly! Breakage!! True. All of these statements are true, but so is the fact that poly liners leach endocrine disrupting chemicals into the food and beverages they contain, and unfortunately (for anyone arguing that it's only a "little tiny bit") the dose does not determine the effect. Loads of hard problems to tackle when it comes to plastic. The lowest hanging fruit is to stop making so much dumb stuff out of plastic. We want plastic and vinyl OUT of school supplies altogether, and believe with every (plastic) fiber of our being that teaching children the consequences of plastic is a critical step forward in breaking their involuntary and ingrained addiction to this cheap, disposable, insidious material....
