The fundraiser will be in lieu of their fall fashion show and luncheon. Thank you DCG for all that you do for children in our community. We are cheering for you and look forward to the event. Please save the date and share if you can !
What are you reading right now ? A few members of the Winter Nights Executive Team recently finished reading ‘Evicted’ by Matthew Desmond. https://www.evictedbook.com/ The book tells the story of eight families in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and documents the spiral of poverty that comes with low rent and low protection housing. In the epilogue Desmond proposes suggestions for tackling the crisis. Here’s what Jo Kerner, our volunteer government grant writer had to say about the Pul...itzer Prize winning book. The two suggestions from the author for changes are 1.) to expand the housing voucher system, and 2.) for courts to hire lawyers and require that a person or family being evicted be represented by a lawyer. The author also maintains that eviction prevention will cost less and do more for the problem of homelessness in this country than the present system. The possible drawback for implementing is that the present tax benefits for middle and upper class homeowners are costing government money that could be used to house the homeless and should be looked at. The book won a Pulitzer Prize. After reading the book, I thought of all the interviews I've done during the past five years that involved eviction as a cause of homelessness and remembering those families tugged at my heart. The real people in the book are compelling and sensitively, extensively described and you will recognize them...
