Wink Wisdom of the Week: Astigmatism What is this "stigma" everyone talks about? ASTIGMATISM (one word) is a common vision condition that may cause blurred vision. It occurs when the clear front surface of the eye, called the Cornea, is irregularly shaped (you may have heard your eye doctor say 'egg-shaped') and prevents light from focusing properly on the back of your eye (called the Retina). Most people have some degree of astigmatism but not everyone requires glasses to se...e clearly. When astigmatism is combined with near-sightedness (myopia) or far-sightedness (hyperopia), glasses may help relieve symptoms of blurred vision, double vision, eye strain, and glare. How do you know if you have astigmatism? With one eye covered, look at the center of the wheel here and determine if some spokes look darker than others. If so, you might have an astigmatism!
