Meet Sixth-Grade Teacher Ms. Karina Hall Ms. Karina Hall is a sixth grade humanities teacher. In her class, students learn social studies and language arts combined. This is a hallmark of Willie Brown, where classes combine multiple subjects for more connected student learning. For example, her students are currently studying ancient Greece. The students pick a Greek god and create a mini book about it. They write and draw while learning about mythology. ... The students are very receptive to this kind of learning. Not only is it hands-on and taps into their artistic abilities, it helps make connections across subjects. She credits her effectiveness as a teacher to her relationship building skills. I’m committed to getting to know my students. I check in with them outside of the classroom and share stories about myself. Having this connection shows the students I have their back and it helps with trust. Also, I was born and raised in the Bayview, so that helps me relate to what the students might be going through. Asked what she loves about the school, Ms. Hall says the deeply committed staff and the amazing resources available to students. The teachers and staff are really passionate about serving the students. It’s a beautiful environment to work in because I feel supported, and the students feel safe and empowered. And the students have access to so many things that other schools don’t have -- a Maker Space, big science labs, and lots of electives. It’s really a rich environment for learning.

Meet Emily, 7th Grader at Willie Brown What do you like about this school? We have a lot of freedom when it comes to choosing classes and activities. Some of the electives I’m taking are robotics and music and they are both really good. At lunchtime I can hang out at the library or maker space with my friends and work on projects or just talk.... What are your favorite classes? Robotics. We do builds as challenges and learn coding and electrical engineering. It’s really challenging and you have to be committed to the work or you might get kicked out. The class also shows me what robotics is about and how it’s a well paid career option if I want to go into it. I also like social studies because we’re learning modern history like voting rights and other things that affect us now. We do a lot of fun projects like making posters so it’s not just text books all the time. Who is your favorite teacher? Mr. Robertson (robotics teacher). He genuinely cares about students’ learning and has a lot of hope in us. He pushes us and is not afraid to tell us the truth if we’re not doing well. He’s fun but he also makes sure we get things done. When was a time you needed help and the school supported you? I have a lot of problems with my sensitive stomach so I go to the school’s Wellness Center. They have nurses and doctors who really help me. It’s a really good center because it’s free and they also have social workers, so even if you don’t have health insurance they can help with physical or emotional problems.
