What's this? A skunk wearing a shirt?! | This poor adult male skunk was called in to @siliconvalleyanimalcontrol by a Santa Clara resident last week after he had been entangled on several wires next to their home. This was a lengthy rescue endeavor: the animal control officer cut him out of the wires, only to have him immediately dart under a structure where he could not be caught! The next day, the officer returned and was able to capture the skunk and bring him to WCSV for ...evaluation and care. At WCSV, our animal care staff sedated the skunk and removed the remaining wire, which was deeply embedded all around his chest and was cutting almost an inch into the skin. We are treating his wound with daily wound care, bandage changes, antibiotics, and pain medication. His "shirt" is actually his freshly changed bandage and wrap! We are hoping that, with our help, he can fully recover from this painful injury. ___________ #wcsv #sanjose #santaclara #stripedskunk #wildlife #bayareanature #nature #helpushelpthem #bayareanonprofit #skunk #resuce #teamwork #keepthemwild #wildliferehab #wildlifemedicine

Many of you may remember this young coyote from a few weeks ago, who came in after being hit by a car, not once, but twice! For those who don’t recall his story, he was brought to us in mid-September, with a bleeding mouth, swollen gums, a loose tooth, skinned foot pads, and shredded nails. These are all painful, blunt impact trauma injuries that arise from bracing for and colliding with a vehicle...or in his case, two vehicles. We were not sure if this coyote would survive a...t first due to the severity and number of his injuries. WCSV stabilized him with fluids, pain management, antibiotics, and wound treatment, and he slowly began improving. After a little more than two months in care, his wounds healed, he was vaccinated, and he was moved to an outdoor enclosure with several other coyotes in care to build up strength. WCSV is thrilled to say that, thanks to your support, donations, and the hard work of our team, our efforts at treating him were successful. We returned him to the wild last Monday! He was released in a suitable habitat close to his finding location, far away from any cars. We like to think he’s thrilled to be back in the wild: check out this video we took of his release, where he immediately recognized his surroundings and ran back to his home! In early November, a dog owner at a dog park in Mountain View discovered this injured American Coot that was unable to fly. Animal control responded, and brought the bird to WCSV. When this adult bird was admitted, it was cold and thin, and we found two fractures on its leg. Given the finding circumstances, it’s most likely that this bird had been caught by a dog. Our staff immediately administered pain medication, antibiotics, and splinted the leg. The bird is currently set... up in a small enclosure made for aquatic and pelagic birds, and is resting on a circular cushion designed to take pressure off the leg. Though its prognosis is still guarded, we are hoping this bird’s fractures will heal and it will be able to be returned to the wild to fly once again. In late October, animal control brought us a juvenile female raccoon that had been reported as being stuck in a fence. Luckily, someone had noticed her and placed a call to animal control, who freed her from the fence and brought her to us. Once she was admitted, our animal care staff quickly went to work. We estimate that she had been there for at least three whole days, and those three days must have been agonizing: she was thin and very dehydrated on intake, and surely wou...ld not have survived without intervention. We hydrated her with subcutaneous fluids and are treating her swollen leg with anti-inflammatories, antibiotics, and rest. She is still in care with us, and we are still regularly changing her bandages as her wounds heal. We hope to return her to the wild soon. Oh nose! | This eastern gray squirrel, which WCSV admitted last week, is the unfortunate victim of a tree-trimming saw. We don't want to imagine how much pain this poor squirrel was in... At intake, our staff administered strong pain medication and performed a thorough exam to assess injuries. His nose was nearly cut off, the sides of his cheeks were torn open, and he has a large laceration under his arm.... Despite the severity of his wounds, he is spunky and active! We are closely monitoring his progress and treating his wounds, and he has already improved greatly under the care of our expert staff. Cross your fingers for his speedy recovery, and please consider a donation today to help us fund the cost of treatment for this little fellow and other wildlife that needs our help. __________ #helpushelpthem #squirrel #wcsv #wildliferehab #sanjose #bayareanature #nature #wildlife #nonprofit #bayarea #keepthemwild

Not Your Usual Ducks! | Check out these two uncommon ducks that WCSV recently had in care! When most people hear "duck," they think of the ubiquitous Mallard, but both of these birds are unique in their own special ways. On 10/3 we received a beautiful waterbird called a Northern Shoveler. Their large, shovel-shaped bills help them effectively forage for food! She was found in San Jose limping and unable to fly. At intake, our staff found she had a thin body condition, abras...ions to her beak, and was favoring her left leg. On 10/2 we received this female ruddy duck who was found injured in someone's backyard. Though you can't see it in the picture, Ruddy Ducks are small, compact birds with long, stiff, upright tails that they use for courtship. Males also have blue bills and chestnut-colored feathers, giving them their common name. This little female duck was found with blood on her chest and mild abrasions to her legs. Both birds were given supportive care and then transferred to our friends International Bird Rescue for further treatment. _____________ #wcsv #sanjose #waterbirds #teamwork #northernshoveler #ruddyduck #ducks #wildlife #wildliferehab #bayareanature #bayarea #siliconvalley #nonprofit
