2020 has been a busy and challenging year for us here at WCA! This year we took in a total of 6,708 animals. Of those animals we received a total of 206 different species including 1 amphibian, 4470 birds, 2202 mammals and 30 reptiles. We could not save as many animals as we do without the help of our community. Thank you to our staff, dedicated volunteers, rescuers, donors, numerous wildlife centers we network with and anyone else who helped us during this difficult year. To celebrate the end of 2020 here is a handful of the animals we had the chance to help this season! We hope you enjoy. Cheers to 2021 and another year of saving wildlife!
Thank you to everybody who has bought items off of our amazon wishlist or made a monetary donation! We are grateful for all of the goodies and we couldn't rehab as many animals as we do without your help! Wishlist: https://wildlifecareassociation.com/how-you-can-h/wishlist/
Patient of the day: Striped Skunk What a stinking adorable way to spend Christmas Eve! This skunk is perfectly healthy so we will actually be releasing him tonight! Reminder: WCA will be closed tomorrow (Dec. 25th). If you find an injured animal, put it in a dark, quiet space, provide heat, don't feed it, and leave it alone until you can bring it to us at 10am on Dec. 26th.... Thank you and stay safe!
WCA's special holiday hours: Thursday Dec. 24th: 10am-4pm Friday Dec. 25th: Closed Thursday Dec. 31st: 10am-4pm Friday Jan. 1st: 10am-4pm... Happy Holidays!
Patient of the Day: Canada Goose This goose had string wrapped around both of his legs for over a month. The rescuer called us a couple of times for advice on how to capture him and one of our volunteers even went out to try to capture him but unfortunately he flew away anytime they got close to him. The rescuer finally captured it and brought it in. We managed to get all of the string off and he is now on its way to recovery! He will be sent to International Bird Rescue tomorrow where they will continue his care!
Down to the wire on getting your bird photo entered in the WCA 2020 Fall Photo Contest Submit your picture on the Wildlife Care Association Facebook page as a message with photo attachment. Contest is open between October 1 to December 31, 2020. Entries can be made in two categories- Under 12 years old you can enter FREE! Those over 12 are asked to include a minimum $5.00 donation to WCA on the Facebook donate link for each entry. (Under 18 yrs old? Ask your parents to help!) Submissions should include your email, the location photo was taken, and your best guess what type of bird this might be. Along with our full-time birds this is a great time to see many passing thru or wintering in our region! Say smile birdies!
Patient of the day: Red-tailed Hawk This hawk was brought in by Animal Control because she was unable to fly. Fortunately, we didn't find anything severely wrong with her. She just has a swollen elbow and is in need of free food Amazon wishlist: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/ls/ref=d6k_applink_bb_dls
Patient of the day: Common Poorwill Most of the time when this species comes into our center, there is actually nothing wrong with them. They are just a misunderstood species. They are ground dwellers and they cannot take flight from the ground. Observe them from a distance to see if it needs helps but if its just on the ground with no obvious injuries, then you can just let them be
Thanks to all who tasted to save wildlife! Win, win!
Patient of the day: Western Pond Turtle We don't know exactly what happened to this turtle but it came in with a cracked shell and covered in leeches. We managed to get all of the leeches off, cleaned his shell and now we are working on repairing the crack!! Wish him luck!
Patient(s) of the day: Virginia opossum So many baby opossums! Fun fact: the baby with the purple ears is marked because he had an abscess and marking the ears is an easy way for us to know which one needs to get meds
Patient of the day: Horned Grebe This is a nonbreeding adult or an immature grebe since it doesn't have the distinctive black head with golden tufts. We highly recommend looking up what the breeding adults look like if you've never seen one!
Patient of the day: Red-shouldered Hawk This hawk came in with a broken wing but luckily we were able to splint it! Hopefully he recovers! We are really low on bleach so please consider donating either by dropping it off at our facility or ordering through our wishlist on amazon! Thank you
Thanks to Kevin Luther, Winemaker at Voluptuary and Lucid Wines for his support. If you missed the live broadcast on YouTube you can still see it. Better yet you can order the Virtual Tasting Kit to enjoy as Kevin shares insights on tastes, mood and food pairings. Visit voluptuary.com for more and click on Virtual Tastings. Check out the broadcast on YouTube!
Patient(s) of the day: Eastern Gray Squirrel There are 4 baby squirrels in this cuddle pile! They haven't even opened their eyes yet.
Patient of the Day: Virginia Opossum This opossum is a darker coloration than normal. As you can see from the pictures, his fur is mainly black. This is a very rare coloration but it will not affect his survival rate, it just makes him a cutie!
Patient of the day: Western Grebe He will be going to the International Bird Rescue first thing tomorrow morning. If you want to support WCA, we are currently in need of bleach, Chlorhexidine and hand soap. You can find all of these items on our Amazon wishlist https://wildlifecareassociation.com/how-you-can-h/wishlist/ or you can drop off donations at our facility any day from 10am-6pm
Thank you to Voluptuary Winery for supporting our mission and donating to us! We talked about our kingsnake and barn owl on their wine tasting livestream and they will donate a portion of their sales to us! We had a blast working with them and you can still buy their wine kits that support WCA at https://www.voluptuarywine.com/virtual-tasting
Patient of the day: Virginia Opossum One of our patients enjoying a crunchy snack!
Tune in taste and save wildlife! If you did not order the WCA tasting kit no worries, they will still be available and Wildlife Care receives a donation for every order. Thanks!
