Pheasant season is here

Red Flag warnings again posted over much of California until late Friday. Be fire safe. If you are using Wilderness Unlimited properties, bring the required fire fighting equipment, be prepared to evacuate at a moments notice, if asked to leave do not argue. If you don’t have the equipment listed in the newsletter, you will be asked to leave the property.... You are responsible for your own safety, make sure you keep up to date on all road closures in the area. You need to get the most up to date information, fire and closure data from the previous day, sometimes a few hours old is not sufficient. Conditions change rapidly. The staff at Wilderness Unlimited is trying to move members with reservations on ranches in closed areas to other ranches, and when safe, trying to accommodate allowing members back into ranches near fire areas, but not at risk of members safety, jeopardizing landowners safety and property, nor hampering fire fighters and evacuation routes. Do not drive around closed roads to access properties. Please be patient. While the CalFire and CalTrans websites are good for news, it is sometimes better to Google the name of the fire, (ie August fire Complex), the county, the nearest town, landmark, today’s date, and include the words fire closure update. These are just some of the links Wilderness Unlimited is monitoring, you need to do your own due diligence before you decide to go. https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/maps/6983/ https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/article/7136/55384/ https://www.fire.ca.gov/incidents/ https://www.fire.ca.gov//16/august-complex-includes-doe-f/ http://quickmap.dot.ca.gov/ https://roads.dot.ca.gov/roadscell.php https://www.tripcheck.com/ https://myodfw.com//wildfire-and-its-impact-fish-and-wildl Here is a good weather link: https://youtu.be/bo9NA_Fp7_k

Do you want to see what the John Day River area around the Wilderness Unlimited Twickenham Ranch looks like? This Youtube video was just posted by Gig Harbor Fly shop from a drift they did in June, which is a little early for the best Smallmouth bass fishing. It looks like they started drifting around Dayville and either took out at the public ramp at Twickenham bridge that borders the WU ranch or Priest Hole about another day or two drift downstream. I don’t think Burnt Ran...ch launch was open due to Covid, which would have been the next takeout location, but they may have taken out just upstream at Service Creek. Anyway, the river, views and the habitat is very similar to what you see on his video. This time of year, the flows are much lower, and a member can float from the upper section of Wilderness Unlimited Twickenham Ranch to the lower about 4.5 river miles downstream in hard side kayaks, inflatable kayaks designed for rivers( not toys) pontoon boats with oars, standup paddle boards ... the drift boat whitewater raft season usually ends prior to July 4, the water gets too low for them and they spend all day dragging the boat. Our camp area is at the lower section. August is a great time for hopper flies, but for smallmouth, Senkos, spinnerbaits, Rapala type lures, jigs,... just about anything works. There are also catfish, carp, pikeminnow ( yuck) , trout and in the winter wild steelhead. This is a safety first place, you are a long way from medical evacuations, so come prepared and wear your PFD, it’s so remote you probably won’t need PPE unless you go to the store. If you go, plan a MORNING side trip to nearby John Day Fossil Beds National Monument https://www.nps.gov/joda/index.htm and another trip to go dig for thunder eggs. https://traveloregon.com//thunder-eggs-oregon-treasures-i/ Your cell phone will probably NOT WORK anywhere in the canyon, so it is a real get away trip. Bring your bird watching binos, Golden Eagles fly here, hawks , and all other sorts of birds of prey. Bighorn Sheep can be seen on the canyon walls, deer, elk... and if you like to stargaze, bring your telescope. Our Private river access point is remote, about 2 hours East of Bend depending on how much you like to stop and smell the flowers and take pictures of old barns and Mountain views. https://youtu.be/B0K_YCiRSdc
