Today is World Hippo Day, a day to celebrate the world’s third-largest mammal, which as an adult can weigh 8,000 pounds! There is only one continent in the world you can find a hippo, and that continent is Africa, where they are native to over 30 countries there. These herbivores can live up to 50 years in the wild. There are only two species of hippos - the common hippopotamus and the pygmy hippo. Spread the word today about conservation through education, and learn more about the hippos on #WorldHippoDay.

Today is National Wildlife Day and on this day honoring wildlife let us not just pay lip service to our fellow species with whom we have traveled the road of evolution but may we find ways in our daily life to avoid polluting the environment we all depend on for survival - they cannot survive without human help - let's show how evolution has given us the gift of reason and be reasonable about our consumption of our natural resources so wildlife can share in our joint survival.

"Celebrating World Giraffe Day - These gentile giants who roam majestically across an ever decreasing landscape are becoming endangered. How can anyone think a giraffe looks better on their floor than in its own landscape, or that anything that belongs to this beautiful animal is best used as some mythical medical treatment. Please celebrate giraffes and boycott all countries who import giraffe byproducts." Stefanie Powers, President

We’ve received the news that all schools are closed in Kenya and we will be shutting down operations at the Education Center. Please follow all the best advice and all the most sensible behavior; wash hands, stay away from crowded areas and for all of our older supporters, please stay at home. It’s time to do all those things at home that you’ve put off and be creative. Everyone’s in the same boat, so let us pull together as a species and hopefully we’ll survive this crisis.

On World Wildlife Day 2020 we celebrate the special place wild plants and animals in their many varied and beautiful forms have in the world’s biological diversity. Every day the foundation works to raise awareness of the multitude of benefits of wildlife to people, particularly to those communities who live in closest proximity to it, and through our educational programs we address the threats they are facing and the urgent need for governments, civil society, private sector actors and individuals to add their voices and take actions to help conserve wildlife and ensure its continued use is sustainable. Won’t you join us today?
WHWF mourns the loss of the passing of Jerry Lentz, the former Zoo Director at Busch Gardens Tampa, who collaborated with Stefanie Powers and the Mt. Kenya Game Ranch to accomplish the capture and shipment of the largest collection of giraffe every attempted. It was sponsored by Busch Gardens, where the giraffe lived happily in their large outside enclosure. He was a visionary and one of the generations greatest zoo directors.
On International Zebra Day we want to remind our supporters about our line of greeting cards, several of which feature the zebra. Check out our cards here https://whwf.org/shopgreetingcards.html

Today is International Zebra Day. The largest of these striped equids is the Grevy zebra, an endangered species found in Ethiopia and northern Kenya, with a small introduced population in southern Kenya. It’s estimated that less than 2,500 Grevy’s zebras remain in the wild. They live in semi-arid scrub and grasslands, preferring hot, dry regions and can often be seen on the open plains, mingling with other grazing animals, such as wildebeest, ostriches and antelopes. Donate today in honor of International Zebra Day to help us continue our educational programs on conservation and animal species protection.
We recently welcomed our first group of physically challenged students to our education center. Our staff prepared well in advance for this visit from the Furaha Center in Meru, and with the assistance of our administrator, all sections at the education center were made wheelchair accessible. It was the first time these children had seen wild animals up close, and although most of them could not speak, from the look on their faces we could see how excited they were. Thanks to our donors these children enjoyed a day they will remember for a long time and went home with a smile on their faces.
Happy New Year to all! Hope you are starting off your new year with our 2020 calendar. If you haven't ordered yours yet, it is not too late ... https://whwf.org/shopwhwf.html

The education center is home to a herd of llamas, who act as ambassadors of diversity as they are the "camels" of the Andes. Our Adopt A Llama program gives our students the unique opportunity to learn first-hand about llamas. https://whwf.org/adoptallama.html
In 1996 we launched our Adopt A Desk program, and through your amazing generosity we have donated close to 1,000 desks to our rural communities. Each desk donation inspires these students to study and work harder, and each year we see the results in higher test scores from these students. Thank you as we continue to bring more needed desks. https://whwf.org/adoptadesk.html
On Giving Tuesday your general donations support the mission and programs at our main education center, which welcomes over 11,000 students each year at no cost to them. Additionally, through our rural outreach programs at five rural schools in neighboring districts we have reached thousands more, supplying them with libraries, classrooms, and sustainable kitchens / canteens that enable us to continue to spread our message of conservation through education.
Today is Giving Tuesday, a day of global giving. It is also a day of thanks, our thanks to all of you, our loyal donors. Many of you have been with us from the beginning, and others have joined us along the way, but thanks to everyone of you, our programs continue to grow and flourish, reaching more and more people each year.

Today is International Snow Leopard Day. Like most animals today, the snow leopard species faces the threat of extinction despite both its ecological importance and spiritual significance to indigenous communities. At the first Global Snow Leopard and Ecosystem Protection Forum held in October 2013, all 12 snow leopard range countries endorsed the Bishkek Declaration, a commitment to protect and recover snow leopard populations and their fragile habitats. Each year thereafter Oct 23 has been designated International Snow Leopard Day in order to commemorate the anniversary of the Bishkek Declaration and to create awareness about the plight of the now 4,000 snow leopards left in the wild.

Today is World Animal Day a day to give voice to all animals who can’t speak for themselves. World Animal Day dates back to 1925, when Heinrich Zimmermann organized the first celebration in Berlin, Germany to raise awareness and improve the welfare of animals. Ecosystems are extremely fragile. When one species exits for any reason, it often has serious repercussions for the rest of the system. By celebrating World Animal Day, we raise awareness about the importance of conserving the balance in our ecosystems. Please consider making a donation today to help fund our programs that combine education with conservation. Thank you.
