Thank you SO MUCH to everyone who came out to our Barbican Cocktail Garden over the past couple of months. We’re glad we could bring you a little sunshine (and rain and smoke and heatwaves) and refreshment at this time. Your support means the world to us. A special thank you to all the great bar teams who joined us for our pop up series and to our outstanding staff who made cocktails and dreams happen under new and challenging circumstances. And with that, Whitechapel is go...ing to take a short nap. Unfortunately, under the current conditions, there is no path for us to remain operational in any capacity that doesn’t involve more losses, so we’re going dark until circumstances improve and we can see a path forward to viability. We will closely monitor the conditions, as well as the comfort level of our guests and staff, and we’ll look forward to welcoming you back into the cozy confines of our underground gin palace as soon as we can. On this date in Whitechapel history... On October 4th, 1936 The Battle of Cable Street took place in London's East End when police were sent to protect a fascist march by the British Union of Fascists. The "battle" was what ensued when the 3,000 fascists were confronted by tens of thousands of antifascists and were forced to cancel their march. However, as so often happens in these instances, the fascists grew in strength "by portraying themselves as innocent British citizens whose rights to lawful demonstrations were endangered." History may not repeat itself, but it sure does tend to rhyme a lot.
