COMING SOON SUNDAY MAY 5th Contact Improvisation and Improvisation Workshop with NYC Artist mayfield brooks When: Sunday May 5... Time: 2-4pm Location: White Box Live Arts, San Diego Cost; $15-$30 sliding scale (no one turned away for lack of funds - please message Anya Cloud) *Open to everyone. No previous experience necessary. *This workshop is possible through the collective effort of S. Cal artists Kristianne Salcines, taisha paggett, and Anya Cloud. Description: How to ParLAY the Dance (A prelude to mayfield’s CI intensives at Earthdance & SFDI 2019) This workshop is inspired by mayfield’s ongoing, life long project and movement practice, Improvising While Black (IWB). Within this approach is an invitation to ParLAY the dance. Lay your body down, play, pray (as in ask earnestly through vocalized expression), pay respects to ancestors. Come to the dance as you are. We come to each other in the same waywithout pretense, assumption or expectationsjust being together. In and out of contact. Practicing refusal and consent. Embracing rest. Sounding, singing, shouting. Dancing inside of questions. Improvising among ancestors, revolutionaries, ocean, air and earth. For more on IWB go to this link. https://contactquarterly.com//v/iwbimprovising-while-black Bio: mayfield brooks improvises while black, and is currently based in brooklyn, new york. mayfield is a movement-based performance artist, vocalist, urban farmer, writer, and wanderer. they studied contemporary dance at the school for new dance (sndo) in amsterdam, moving on center in oakland, ca, and holds a mfa in interdisciplinary performance from uc davis and a masters in performance studies from northwestern university. mayfield is currently an artist in residence at movement research nyc, was a 2018 wow/uny artist in residence at governors island nyc, and a 2019 dance and process (dap) artist at the kitchen nyc. mayfield has farmed in urban & local settings, and teaches & performs dance and vocal improvisation nationally and internationally.

The first performance of six debuts tomorrow night at 7:30 pm, and this is one performance that you don't want to miss!
