I share this story for a specific reason. I’m often asked if I enjoy my profession. My usual answer is surgical cases are a high for me. Today we captured this x-ray of a patient’s dental implant which I placed over 4 years ago. This case is very important to me. My masters thesis involved a clinical trial which I conducted under full review as the chief investigator. The new protocol was the idea of placing implants immediately after an extraction of an non restorable toot...h without the use of bone grafting! The norm and standard is to use a graft of some type! My study suggested and proved with success, if my developed protocol is used that just maybe this grafting idea can be skipped! In the clinical trial some patients were surgically treated with grafts and some without! This is a single example of a non grafted case! When I saw this x-ray pop up on the computer screen four years later with complete healthy native bone growth, it was not the biology or the science of bone growth which made me smile but this realization. Stepping out of the box and spinning my hamster wheels in my head actually paid off! Just a sweet sweet moment in my continuous educational journey!
