The West Sacramento Fire Department and the Firefighters Association fully recognize and acknowledge that the decision to cancel the annual Santa Firetruck Canned Food Drive this year is very disappointing news; the Santa food drive marks a fun, festive, and unique opportunity for both celebration and generous giving within our community, and it has occurred uninterrupted for decades. Our firefighters, several of whom have fond memories of this event from their own childhoods... in West Sacramento, have consistently and eagerly volunteered their own time to coordinate and staff this event since its inception. We share in the feelings of frustration and sadness that have been posted to various social media outlets; this tradition is one that is truly cherished by all of us. Please know that the decision to cancel this event this year was not taken lightly. In the face of the dramatically escalating coronavirus pandemic, we felt that our tradition, despite how special it is to all of us, could not take precedence over preserving the health and safety of the public which we are sworn to protect. West Sacramento alone has seen an almost five-fold increase in coronavirus cases since October. For us to hold this event in light of this dramatic uptick would be both irresponsible and possibly dangerous to our community as well as our firefighters. Please know that while we are keenly aware of and share in the anguish which this difficult decision causes our community, we look forward to a healthier 2021 when it can resume.

The WSFD has transitioned its entire fleet of apparatus from operating on conventional, petroleum diesel to Renewable Diesel. Renewable Diesel is a low-carbon fuel produced from 100 percent renewable and sustainable raw materials such as natural fats, vegetable oils, and greases. Renewable diesel cuts greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80 percent and significantly reduces emissions, all while enhancing fleet performance. The switch to Renewable Diesel will assist with reducing the carbon emissions and petroleum use and improve air quality without sacrificing power or performance. WSFD is the only fire department in the region to have made this switch to its entire fleet.

The holidays are upon us. Thanksgiving is the peak day for home cooking fires. With the COVID-19 pandemic, more people will be staying home this Thanksgiving. Here are some safety tips to keep yourself and your family safer from fire. Make sure smoke alarms are working. Stay in the home while cooking your turkey. Check on it frequently. Stay in the kitchen while cooking on the stovetop so you can keep an eye on the food.... The NFPA (National Fire Protection Agency) discourages the use of outdoor gas-fueled turkey fryers. If you still choose to deep fry a turkey, make sure it is completely thawed. #NFPA #westsacfire https://youtu.be/kjUynq0HXdQ

On Sunday, November 8, West Sacramento Fire Department responded to a vegetation fire at 32000 Jefferson Blvd in Clarksburg. The West Sacramento Fire Department is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) the official sponsor of Fire Prevention Week for more than 90 years to promote this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen! The campaign works to educate everyone about simple but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe. According to NFPA, cooking is the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries in the United States. Almost half (44%) of reported home fires started in the kitchen. Two-thirds (66%) of home cooking fires start with the ignition of food or other cooking materials. #firepreventionweek #wsfd #westsacfire

On September 14, WSFD responded to the 3000 block of Channel Drive for an odor investigation of bleach inside of a large commercial warehouse. Prior to their arrival, the building was evacuated of all personnel. During further investigation, it was determined that the bleach smell was actually ammonia. The strong odor was caused by an unknown amount of ammonia released into the building after the failure of their newly installed ammonia refiguration system. WSFD worked an extended operation with the property owner representatives and the refrigeration contractors to isolate the leak and evacuate the remaining vapor. No one was injured due to the release and the incident was reported to the State Warning Center.
