The Leftovers staff joined the 'STOP Yulin Dog Meat Festival' protest today at the Chinese Consulate. It was horrifying to find out not only that so many dogs are slaughtered, but to make it even worse that these people believe that the meat tastes better if the animal is tortured before they kill it with a baseball bat to the head. They torch it and then pull legs off while they are alive. Their Dog Meat Festival begins June 21st and an additional 10,000 dogs will be tortured and killed for the festival. Thank you to the over 1.1 million people who signed the Care2 petition asking China to stop the Yulin Dog Meat Festival! Unfortunately, China hasn't budged, and still refuses to act. Unless we increase the pressure, over 10,000 dogs will be killed in less than two weeks! Some of you may be aware of the senior cats that have graced us with their company over the years. They have all been rescued from a bad situation and brought here so staff and customers can try and make up for the attention and love they were so cruelly denied. Many have been adopted and have joined a warm, loving family. Recently we lost, probably the oldest cat we've had. Her name was Pearl and her age was guesstimated to be about 20. Pearl had survived deplorable neglect/abuse. We tried in the time we had with her to give her the love, attention, importance, medical care, food comfort and warmth she needed and rightly deserved. Pearl slept as close to the space heater as she could get, so we didn't interfere. She looked loved and happy, what more could we want.
