Here is a $500 hairball. I decided to install a solid state drive in my wife's computer. So I opened it, installed the drive, took the opportunity to clean it with some canned air, a ton of dust came out and I closed it up. So while installing a Microsoft update on my wife's laptop it suddenly shut down. Then it would only start about 1 in 6 attempts. This certainty seems like a over heating problem. Push start, the fan would come on for 2 seconds then shut down, but the...n a few tries later it would come on and run for hours. I opened the machine and again blew out the air flow path and the air would make the fan spin....seems like the path was clear but the intermittent boot continued. I was almost resigned to buying a new machine. Frustrated and frugal I decided to open it again and this time I disassembled the unit and found this hairball lodged in the fan housing. Apparently when I blew in the side vent it forced a bunch of the hair into the fan housing. I guess sometimes the fan would spin freely and sometimes not. Anyway this hairball almost cost me over $500! See more
