In response to this trend, we have been intentionally building and growing a robust China Studies Area of Focus within our Master's of Development Studies Degree Program. The China Studies area of focus is designed to enable students to evaluate key areas of the Chinese society, especially as they are related to... the emerging trends in culture and society, history and dynamics of Christian movements, China, and international development. This area of focus also helps students develop an integrated vantage point through which they may explore further areas of interests within the general China studies field. What do you think of when you hear the word "urban?" Is it similar to this image above? Do you see heavily populated cities? Does your mind drift to images of homelessness? Slum cities? Over half of the world’s population (4 billion people) experience severe water scarcity at least one month per year, while half a billion people experience severe water scarcity throughout the year. As densely populated and rapidly expanding informal urban settlements and slums face water scarcity, it often results in illness. Our "Biblical Theology in an Urban Context" course focuses on the theme of "Jubilee." The Jubilee Laws of Leviticus 25:8-12 The jubilee is good news from a loving, just, merciful God for the poor. The erasure of debts, the return of land to the landless, the resetting of created inequities... Israel’s jubilee laws, reflect a God who loves, and whose love is manifested in liberation and redemption, mercy, justice and generosity (Tea...rfund, Theology of Jubilee). The jubilee laws acknowledged the reality of living in a broken world: that some families would do better than others, land would be bought and sold over time, people would move around and sometimes even need to sell themselves into bonded labour. They offered a dramatic, radical answer to the situation: a resetting of the society and economy that expressed God’s justice and desire his whole creation to flourish.
