This Red-shouldered Hawk photo was taken from around the Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park trail system in Carlsbad. I don't know if it is possible to see, but looks like the underside of a snake near its feet. These raptors eat a variety of prey, including rabbits and other small mammals, frogs, lizards, and snakes. It swooped low and landed in a nearby pepper tree. Such a nice surprise to get a pretty good (zoomed-in) view.

It's not too late to sign up for tonight's Friends Webinar: Special Birds in Special Places, a panel discussion with several birders from the area to talk about... the places that are most meaningful to them. Join Krisztina Scheeff with KS Nature Photography, Board member and ornithologist Lesley Handa, Jose and Silvia Chavira, and longtime volunteers and advocates Padma Jagannathan and Sree Kandhadai and hear their stories of how their love for birds has grown into a passion for conservation. We'll also hear from Andrew Meyer about recent developments in our ReWild Efforts in Mission Bay. The webinar will take place on Zoom from 6-7 pm; register below to get the Zoom link.

Northern Mockingbirds are noisy and relentless singers that are known to sing well into the night, especially during periods when the moon is bright. The majority of these night-time vocalists are bachelor males, apparently bent on letting the world know that they are alone and available. During their long nocturnal serenades, Northern Mockingbirds are capable of singing over 1,000 songs per hour!!!

These guys are migrating through the area right now. Black-throated Gray Warblers are presently migrating through San Diego. Females do not have the black throat but do have the small yellow spot between the bill and the eye. The photo above is a male. Keep an eye out for them. This one was spotted in Scripps Ranch.

"Birds bring out a sense of peace in us. The graceful nature of these creatures can calm the senses under any circumstances. Simply listening to the sweet songs of birds filling the air is a natural music that rivals anything Beethoven orchestrated. The various colors and shapes of these birds are some of the most beautiful sights in all the natural world..."
