Most adult song birds molt (shed) and replace their feathers once a year, usually after their nesting duties are completed. Having a strong set of fresh new feathers is of tremendous benefit to birds that are facing the rigors of migration or the struggles of surviving a long, cold winter. You can make a difference by making sure your feeders are full of high-fat, high-protein foods that will keep your birds healthy and looking good!

Hummingbird Doppelganger The Sphinx Moth When is a hummingbird really a moth? When a sphinx moth tricks you into believing that it is one! But don’t feel badyou have been fooled by one of best mimics in nature. At first glance, sphinx moths look and move just like a hummingbird. Their large hummingbird shaped body and sharp-pointed wings are instantly deceiving, especially as they hover from flower to flower sucking up nectar. Some say it’s not kind to fool Mother Nature, but it is kind of fun when Mother Nature fools us.

A Bluebird’s Magic Trick Ready to be amazed? What would you say if we told you that bluebirds are not blue? No, we have not gone crazy with cabin fever just yet! Yes, it is true, bluebird feathers contain no blue pigment. The blue color is from an optical illusion that is created by some special cells found in their feathers. These prism-like cells absorb or scatter all of the sunlight’s wave lengths except the color bluethus, almost like magic, they appear blue to us, too. Can you name any other blue colored birds that share this type of feather magic, too?

These tips will help to ensure that the seed you provide your birds will always be healthy and nutritious: - Always store your seed in a cool and dry location. - Store seed in rodent and insect proof containers. - If the seed containers are kept outdoors, secure the lids so that animals cannot get in and contaminate the seed. - Never mix old seed with new seed.... - Our Seed Scoop & Funnel (pictured) is a great way to scoop seed and fill your feeders with minimal spillage. Help migrating birds by feeding your backyard birds! With migration and massive wildfires happening at the same time right now, migrating birds can use all the help they can get. Providing fresh, quality bird seed or nectar, as well as fresh water in the form of bird baths or fountains helps these tiny travelers get to their destinations safely. Offering WBU Bark Butter and/or Bark Butter Bits gives them the extra protein and energy to make the trip. You'll get to enjoy the show while giving them a much-needed boost of nutrition (even if it's a pit-stop to another destination). #savethesongbirds #sharethejoy
