As COVID exposes the fundamental flaws in our food system, what changes do you hope to see after the pandemic is over?

Due to multiple factors #TheWascoFarmersMarket will NOT hold its 5th season this year (2020). COVID-19 has shown us that we need to realize that if we really want to be resilient as individuals and as community, we need to build in more redundancies, buffers and firewalls into the systems we depend on for life. It is these concepts of resiliency and redundancies that are at the center of the Wasco Farmers Market Mission and vision for a strong, vibrant and local community... supported agriculture Network of Wasconians growing food for Wasco ... It is not a critique on our global producers, We live in a wondrous age when global supply chains seamlessly link farmers and consumers ... But in the aftermath of COVID-19...of empty store shelves...it’s important to ask whether we as a society will treat this as a moment to learn a bit about the fragility of the modern world. And that we will commit to and support a more resilient food system for ourselves. (Ok....off the soap box) We would like to thank all of our #volunteers, the #lifeblood of our efforts! The people who grew food for us (producers), our community members that have supported us for 4 seasons! We love you and you will be missed. The city of Wasco for their support over the years. the Wasco downtown Business Association, Sunset Portables Rentals.... and many other Community Partners and organizations that have been a part of our programming over the years..... thank you - thank you - thank you. Hope to see you in 2021! See more

Access to Fresh, Nutritious Food Community food systems are being strained across the state to help ensure that all members in a community have access to healthy and affordable food. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, more than 15 percent of families in the United States are food insecure, meaning they do not at all times have access to enough food for an active, healthy lifestyle for all household members. A local food system is a collaborative network that i...ntegrates sustainable food production, processing, distribution, consumption, and waste management in order to enhance the environmental, economic, and social health of a particular area. So...Where ever you buy.... Please support small farms and food producers in your community during this time as they provide this type of localized food systems. Nutritious food should be for everyone. It sustains our well-being and makes it possible for us to pursue happy, healthy lives. See more

"Q: Many chefs are committed to Slow Food, but could they do anything else? A: The intense media exposure of gastronomy is concentrated on chefs and not on producers. The alliance of the cooks with the farm is fundamental. "
