On June 19, 1865, union soliders were sent to Galveston, Texas to announce that more than 250,000 enslaved black people in the state, were free by executive decree. This day came to be known as "Juneteenth," by the newly freed people in Texas. This took place over 2 years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation had been official since 1863, as the news was intentionally suppressed and enslavement was still a reality in Texas. ... Juneteenth remains the oldest celebration of the end of slavery in the United States, commemorating when the last enslaved black people learned of their freedom. The historical legacy of Juneteenth shows the value of never giving up hope in uncertain times. To learn more about how to honor and celebrate Juneteenth, check out the link in our bio. #Juneteenth

This week’s inspirational figures that have made an impact on Black history are Alice Coachman and Jackie Robinson. Alice Coachman (1923-2013) Alice Coachman Davis (19232014) was an American athlete who made history in the 1948 Olympics as the first Black woman to win an olympic gold metal. She specialized in high jump and was the first black woman to win an Olympic gold medal despite being in recovery from a back injury. She set a record for a 5 ft, 6 1/8 in. high jump.... Later in life, she established the Alice Coachman Track and Field Foundation who's mission was to support younger athletes and provide assistance to retired Olympic veterans. In the decades since her success at the London Olympic Games, Coachman's achievements have not been forgotten. At the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta, Alice was honored as one of the 100 greatest Olympians in history. She has also been inducted into nine different halls of fame, including the National Track & Field Hall of Fame (1975) and the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame (2004). Jackie Robinson (1919-1972) Jack Roosevelt Robinson was an American professional baseball player who became the first African American to play in Major League Baseball in the modern era. Robinson broke the baseball color line when he started at first base for the Brooklyn Dodgers on April 15, 1947. Although he was faced with pushback, harassment, and judgement by opposing teams, fans, and even teammates, Robinson persisted. He went on to have a successful decade-long career, in which Robinson distinguished himself as one of the game's most talented players, recording an impressive .311 career batting average and above all was a vocal civil rights activist.
