I rejected Christianity over a decade of my life. It was reading, researching, and asking questions that led me back to Catholicism. I am a flawed human and it’s not easy being Catholic. I rejoice in Her wisdom and the rules she has because they are for our good and eternal life. It ain’t easy being Catholic. But I wouldn’t trade it for the world, because Christ founded it and redeems me through it. At times there will be teachings from both Sacred Scripture and Tradition (God’s Word / Will communicated to us) that challenges our thoughts, opinions, and world views. It’s okay to struggle with these teachings. It’s okay to wrestle with these truths that invite us to surrender our human understanding of things and grow in our belief of God’s trustworthiness. When we invite God in prayer to help us truly understand His will; and we learn the WHY behind the WHAT (ie research why the Church teaches what it does on matters like abortion, contraception, in vitro fertilization, divorce, gay marriage, etc.) we’ll discover a life-giving reality that we weren’t aware of before. When I’ve chosen to dig deeper (and not just react negatively to the no) I’ve always been pleasantly surprised at the beauty of our Catholic faith and how it truly honors God’s plan as well as the dignity of human life at all its stages. God isn’t just saying NO, don’t do that. He’s saying, Here, I’m offering you an even greater YES. A yes that frees our hearts, minds, and souls to love like He does. When we say Amen at Holy Communion, we’re not just saying I believe in the true presence of Christ in the Eucharist, we’re saying I believe in ALL that the Catholic Church teaches (not just what I pick and choose to be conveniently aligned to my own beliefs).
