At last night's Board meeting, we covered two big topics: 1) Our reopening plans and 2) Neighborhood priority for our magnet schools. I wanted to provide a few ...updates on both. For our reopening plans, you can access the presentation from Dr. Rosas by visiting the agenda here (https://agendaonline.net/public/Meeting.aspx). Please be on the lookout for more accessible information outlining a communications plan for the next few months, with more concrete next steps. In our discussion last night around instituting neighborhood priority for our four schools without boundaries - College Park, Fiesta Gardens, North Shoreview Montessori, Parkside Montessori - there were many disturbing comments made about students who live in the North Central neighborhood that surrounds College Park. As I stated last night, I was appalled at the racist rhetoric that was used by both teachers and parents. We were told that "those students" haven't historically been successful at College Park. We were told that "Mandarin is a really difficult language" and that "students who are learning English" would have trouble. We were reminded that there is another school being built in the corner lot for "those students." These exclusionary and divisive statements have no place in our schools or our community. As a public school district, it is our responsibility to ensure that our schools are safe and welcoming for all students. There are no prerequisites for attending a public school - it doesn't matter where you live, what language you speak at home, or how much money your family has - we have a responsibility and obligation to serve all of our students and to ensure that they are provided with access to a high-quality and rigorous education. In its current state, College Park is not living up to that commitment and the comments last night were indicative of a divisive and unwelcoming environment. To be clear, if kids struggle and leave any of our schools - that is our fault. If you are a teacher who hasn’t been able to successfully serve a diverse group of students, you are accountable. If you are a school leader who has allowed that to happen, you are accountable. If you are a parent who has seen groups of students pushed out of or treated unfairly at your school and haven’t spoken up, you are accountable. As district leadership and Board members, we are accountable for these failures - and that is exactly why we are having this discussion and why we need to make adjustments to what is happening. While I fully support our magnet and immersion programs, and recognize the value they have for our community, these programs have a responsibility to meet the needs of all of our students and families. I shared last night that if the College Park community is unable to provide a safe and welcoming environment for all of our students, then dismantling the program should be on the table for Board discussion. Exclusionary programs have no place in our district. My hope is that our community can work together to maintain a rigorous program that is accessible to all and to invite and welcome students from all backgrounds and neighborhoods to be included. I look forward to working together to make that happen.

When I met Senator Hill, he shared that he always does the work to understand the issues from all sides so when he makes a decision he is centered on his values... with a clear analysis. I have worked hard to earn Senator Hill's endorsement and am so grateful for his support and vote as a San Matean. www.amourencelee.com #teamamo See more
