The event features over 20 select local artists briefly sharing and discussing their work and creative process, along with commentary by gallerist and arts advocate Ashley L. Voss. As the owner and director of Voss Gallery, Ashley dedicates her space to showcasing work by emerging and mid-career artists in both solo and thematically ...organized group shows. Ashley enjoys collecting work by emerging artists, knowing that her purchase is directly supporting the artist’s practice. Voss Gallery presents Prince 2 Queens, a solo exhibition of autobiographically inspired paintings by Serge Gay Jr. that depict the immigrant story as an American story of resilience and perseverance (showing through October 31, 2020). This is a 'Coming to America,' part one of a two part exhibition series about community and immigration. The work is inspired by my family’s history of immigrating to the United States from Port-au-Prince, Haiti in the mid-80s and how we trie...d to adapt and build a sense of culture and community in Queens, New York. Like immigrant stories in the pastthe dream and the search for a better lifeI wanted to create a sense of belonging and hope, even when communities are being torn apart. I invite viewers to examine and experience the immigrant story, as the American story in a new light and through my own lens. This workshop will provide participants with an insightful overview about the history of stenciling and other revolutionary acts of street art as seen in ancient and contemporary art. Participants will also gain a basic understanding of how to design, cut, and spray their very own reusable stencil to take home that day!
