An uphill battle. Army Veteran Robin Keys served her country proudly performing her duties as a military police woman. Ms. Keys transitioned from policing, and worked for many years providing health care services for the elderly in her community of Morrow Bay, California. Ms. Keys fell upon difficult times after a series of unfortunate events. Without stable work Ms. Keys found herself subjugated, lacking secure housing, an income or knowledge of the VA medical/benefits... system. Ms. Keys eventually found herself homeless on the streets of Los Angeles. Like so many marginalized members of our society, Ms. Keys was in need of aid. Ms. Keys sought assistance through Volunteers of America Los Angeles, and was able to obtain permanent and supportive housing at Blue Butterfly Village (BBV). In addition to the two-bedroom town home with all the amenities, Ms. Keys now had access to on site supportive services. Ms. Keys availed herself to many of the resources provided through BBV’s supportive services and was recently selected to receive a vehicle from a collaboration of partners including Service King and Recycled Rides. Ms. Keys submitted her story, expressing that a lack of reliable transportation and the steep hill of the road leading to her residence was a barrier to securing employment. Ms. Keys elaborated that having a car would remove barriers to working, shopping for groceries, and attending medical appointments. Ms. Key’s story was compelling and she was selected to win. The recent pandemic slowed the process of receiving the car, however on September 2nd 2020 Veteran Key’s was given the keys to her new vehicle. Ms. Keys expressed her appreciation for the gift of reliable transportation now more than ever, listing the ways she plans to improve her life and help her neighbors now that she no longer has to take the bus and walk the steep hill, she stated I will pay it forward as she smiled with joy and sighed with relief.
