VMF's Volcan Mountain Nature Center

The Julian Woman's Club visited VMF’s Volcan Mountain Nature Center today. What a treat to introduce them to Volcan Mountain’s glorious, hidden forest!

Today was the first day students visited VMF's Volcan Mountain Nature Center since the pandemic began. Students learned about riparian and meadow ecosystems, watersheds, the indicators of a changing climate, and journaled their discoveries. Throughout the day students also participated in fun sensory activities. VMF wishes to thank seasoned outdoor educator and retired principal of the Cuyamaca Outdoor School, Greg Schuett, who volunteered his time to teach Mrs. McFedries’ ...Julian Elementary School 5th grade students. VMF also wishes to thank Mrs. McFedries who spearheaded today’s adventure in nature as well as Ranger Bill Augustus who helped make this day happen. We look forward to having this class return next week in honor of Earth Day.

Our Conservation Stewardship team was on the 400+ acres of VMF's Volcan Mountain Nature Center this morning assessing road and trail conditions. The beautiful ...Sky Island Trail is still holding on to January’s snow, but showing need for its annual hair cut! Tomorrow, vegetation management crews will begin the multi-day process of clearing and removing brush and the recently fallen trunks of trees killed during past wildfires. Later in the year, we plan to secure funding to perform more extensive fuel reduction and GSOB-mitigation projects in other areas of the Nature Center.
