Have you heard of Crychord or Zymo-Xyl? Usually composers took musical instruments granted. They happily used the instruments the era offered they were part of. Happily? Not quite. Grumpy Beethoven became unhappy with his forte pianos after a while and bugged the instrument builders for louder and finer ones. Bach was arguing with organ builders if he did not get the tone he wanted. However, no one went so far as Harry Partch. He invented a set of instruments. His compositions can be played only on these instruments. To be sure, no one dares to substitute his instruments with some traditional ones, he composed for a 43 tone system he invented instead of the 12 note chromatic scale, common in Western music.
