As of November 1st 2015, the Victorian Government opened the eligibility guidelines for the Back to Work program to include apprenticeships and traineeships. The Victorian Government has allocated $100m to be expended by 1st March 2017 of which less than 10% has been accessed to date.
From our perspective, this means that it has allowed companies to employ new workers via traineeships or apprenticeships with the appropriate VET funding to support the cost of training. In particular, this applies to qualifications that over the past 3-4 years have not been funded to a level that has allowed RTOs to provide a quality outcome, nor were they able to afford to deliver these popular entry level qualifications. In particular, many qualifications such as Retail, Hospitality and Business are now financially viable and can be delivered in the work place, whether it is a sole trainee or larger group.
The program is administered by the State Revenue Office, which is working directly with employers in regards to the lodging of claims and reimbursements for training costs. To date there has been quick turnaround times in commencement payments of either $2500 or $1875 per new entrant. (See below)
Additionally, as the training is via a traineeship or an apprenticeship, the employer may also attract Federal funding dependant on the normal eligibility rules around prior qualifications.
At Apprenticeships Matter, the Back to Work program has allowed new conversations to be had with both our existing employers as well as those who have previously not engaged in the Australian Apprenticeship program.
We have experienced a 30% increase in the uptake of apprenticeships and traineeships in recent months. With this trend expected to continue upwards in the future we welcome the opportunity to present to your staff, in particular those working directly with employers, on how to capitalise on the Back to Work program.
