Today, Sergeant Jerry Chavez completed The Sherman Block Supervisory Leadership Institute program, an 8-week program spread through 8 months. The program provides supervisors great knowledge and experience on first-line supervision and leadership. We are proud to announce the launch of our 2020 Pink Patch Project campaign. This year we commemorate our iconic Vernon Water Tower. The Vernon Water Tower was built in 1961 by Pittsburg-DesMoines Steel Company and sits on Soto Street, north of Bandini Boulevard. The Vernon Water Tower is topped with a light beacon that served as a signal for Vernon officers on patrol before radios were installed in police vehicles. Dispatch signaled officers of a pending call for service by ...lighting the beacon. Officers utilized local pay phones to contact Dispatch upon observing the lit beacon, hence responding to the call for police service. The beacon still sits atop the tower to this day as a reminder to Vernon officers to keep an eye on the light.
