Ventura Pop Up Yoga 06.01.2021

January Is First-Responder Gratitude Month at VPUY! As we wind down what has been an indisputably challenging 2020, it's an excellent opportunity to reflect on the wisdom of Mr. Rogers who always encouraged us in times of crisis to "look for the people who are helping." Ventura first responders: we see you.... The VPUY family wants to recognize the heroes in our amazing community for their hard work and sacrifice. So for the month of January, in the spirit of our 2021 commitment to Begin Again we're proudly offering FREE classes to community firefighters, police, paramedics/EMTs and nurses! We hope that a month of complimentary yoga can help to relieve some of the intense burden that these folks have been shouldering for all of us this year. Please tag your hardworking friends + family members so they can take advantage of this gift from us. PLUS: since we're not out of the woods with CoVID quite yet, we are stoked to offer a continued discounted rate of $45 per month for unlimited classes into the rest of the year for first responder community members. It's the least we can do as a big THANK YOU for your truly selfless work. How to take advantage of this free month: Download our scheduling app. Send us a message in the app with an image of your EMT card or badge We will activate your FREE month! Thank you for showing up for us in 2020!!

This isn’t a physical yoga challenge for 40 Days. This isn’t reading and studying for 40 Days. This IS learning to live and breathe this practice in away that it becomes second nature. ... The persona in the Western world is that Yoga is something we perform. The truth is Yoga is something we live. My teacher’s, teachers have been passing down this wisdom for thousands of years, but the wisdom just cannot be shared within a 60min yoga practice. This 40 Day Renewal will be about Beginning Again. Getting back to the roots, creating strong foundations and growing and exploring AND playing from there. The vision is that when 40 Days is up... you realize you’ve only just begun your Yoga journey and are excited about all the potential it has to offer. I’d love for you to join me on this exploration. This course is for those just beginning their practice and wanting to understand it and have conversations about why it affects us so deeply. This course is for those long time practitioners that have felt the longevity and the life this practice breathes into the body and are curious how to amplify that when they roll up the mat. This course is for anyone that had their life rocked and worlds turned upside down in 2020. You feel yourself seeking and searching to gain MORE out of life. Take a moment to tap into your body as you read these statements. Do you feel an emotional response? If so I invite you to find all the details on our Events tab. This is an investment in Self. I am offering this on a sliding scale and have provided 3 options that will work for most. However if you find yourself in a position that may need a solution I haven’t listed, in order to participate, I invite you to reach out. https://www.venturapopupyoga.com/event Let’s begin again... let’s begin RENEWED.

We said see ya soon to miss @paisleyoshea today. She’s taking a giant leap and following her dreams back to New Zealand. It’s a beautiful thing watching someone truly step into their inner wisdom and follow their intuition as they’re being guided. It’s always hard to let people go but no one would be better off by holding someone back from chasing what they’re truly meant to do. Paisleys teachings have expanded so much this year and we’re working on a way to keep her v...irtual with us as she lands in her new space. We’re so proud of the incredible work that she puts into this community and how she’s held space for each of you. So again Pais we wish you the safest travels and we know we will see you soon one way or another. Appreciation could never be conveyed for the blessings that you’ve rippled out in the VPUY community over the past two years. We LOVE you like crazy and can’t wait to see and be inspired by this new chapter. Much Love, The VPUY Fam

"You can’t stop the waves, but you can learn to surf. John Kabat-Zinn 2020 has undoubtedly been a year without a manual. We've been asked to break old habits, surrender, and learn to be comfortable in all the discomfort that's been thrown our way. On more than one occasion I’ve likened the experience to the ocean... some days we've been catching all the waves and other days we've just been trying catch our breath so we don’t drown.... Yoga has always been what I’ve turned to catch my breath with the ebb and flow of life. Our breath is our only constant; it gives us life and it takes it away. Learning to maintain our breath, maintains our vitality. Our breath more greatly attunes us to the subtle language of our body to move through physical + emotional tension, pain and some may even say illness. I’d like to invite you even deeper into this practice with us. Spend a morning deepening and enriching your yoga practice while learning to apply it to a new challenge. When we can learn to practically apply the wisdom we learn and FEEL on a yoga mat, we begin to embody this practice and the thousands of years of knowledge it has to support us in our everyday lives. Join Maxwell Miller + @jessyraspiller in partnership with @venturamakossurfcamp for a 1/2 Day Yoga + Surf Retreat on Oct 18th. Details + Registration: https://www.venturapopupyoga.com/event

I was looking at the photos of Sunday Soul this morning and the thought wow we used to fit 60 people in this space. After a moment of melancholy for what was, the essence of Joy flowed. Because it’s not about the quantity but the quality. The vibration, the infusion, the essence of this space still stands the same after every practice regardless of the turnout or the conditions. As we watch old movies and see people in crowds standing shoulder to shoulder. As we recall in...ternational travels and adventures. As we think about how this years upcoming holidays may have to look different than the past. We remember that it’s not about ‘getting back’ to anything. Its the essence of ‘quality’ that 2020 has reminded us to come to. Some day the world will shift. Let’s appreciate what we have right here and right Now. It’s all about what we make of it and HOW we show up. Thank you for the ways that you all show up.

#VenturaYogaAsYouAre Warrior Variations (Virabhadrasana) Where strength meets flexibility. Warrior poses are grounding, opening and expanding. Just like our mountain pose that we began with we begin with our foundation in these variations. Finding our foot patterns and then open up and exploring the body as it rises up for each shape that meets our intention. ... This mini series has been one of my favorites this year. Considered a modified Warrior II. I love the sensation of pulsing into my hips rather then just going right in for a deep hold. This tick tock motion is a technique I use to relax and release the Psoas muscles. You can do this for a min or more with the breath to maximize the sensations. If you’ve taken a Psoas Release class with me we’ve undoubtedly used this method to allow the body to open and let go of tension. Day 5: I can’t wait to see all of the Warrior variations today. If you missed any days feel free to go back and makeup the photos so we can count you in for the challenge and drawing.

We take 30,000+ breaths a day... but how many of those breaths are we even aware of? Have you ever stopped and caught yourself sighing out a stressful exhale? Maybe you’ve noticed how we naturally only breath in our chest? What could happen if we brought a greater awareness to some of our daily breaths? .... Our Monday night teacher @barefootbepko is always increasing our awareness around the importance of conscious breathing. She continuously is dropping new knowledge on us that gives us tools that long last after we roll up our mat. Want some tools to bring home with you? Come start your week out on an air high and catch a sunset with Laura! . Pre-registration for all our classes required as required by Covid Protocols.

#VenturaYogaAsYouAre Cobra Pose/ Up Dog Varition (Bhujangasana) This is a perfect example of finding the pose that works for where you are (figuratively + literally) I typically take baby cobra in my practice. It’s all about what’s my intention in a posture. For me on most days my intention is strengthening my weak back when I come to this heart opener. ... In this case, for the photos purposes, I neared the bottom of my chattarunga and decided a dirt path wasn’t the place for baby cobra. I opted for Upward Facing Dog option. This variation always feels so good but it’s another pose that my body is accustomed to so I have to be intentional about not just passing through it, but finding the benefits of it. It’s important in this variation that we don’t over work the back, and remember we’re here to open the heart. Engaging the inner thighs helps to lift off the legs safely off the earth without constricting in the spine. Slight contraction in the glutes. Think arch the entire spine rather than arching the lower back (OUCH)... meaning no sharp angles from tailbone to crown of the head. I tend to keep my neck at neutral but you can also add a slight lift of the chin to open the throat if that matches your purpose for this pose. Lastly I like a softness in the elbows to keep my shoulders from creeping up to my ears, helping to keep my heart at the front of this posture. I invite you to play with intention in your practice. This week we’re seeing just how many options we have in a single posture. Next time you flow, you can think about what might be best for your body in that moment... and maybe it’s a simple as not wanting to put your belly in the dirt or maybe it’s as complicated as determining what postures compromises your body and which create expansion for your body. Day 4: show us your heart opening Cobra variations. Tag us in your stories to enter to win! We’ve got two Yoga in the Wild practices for you to play with your heart openers today. Meet @paisleyoshea this morning at 9:30 at Marina Park. Or join us for Sunset w. @chels__wut at 4pm. Details and class registration via the wix app.

#VenturaYogaAsYouAre Yogi Squat (Malasana) I would never say that I don’t like a yoga posture... but let’s just say I used to be incredibly challenged by yogi squat. ... I couldn’t do it and it used to frustrate me to no end. In the traditional variation, I couldn’t get my heels to the earth. My lower back would wince in pain when I tried to lengthen my spine. If we were there for any number of minutes I would have to back off and lift my hips higher which just caused my quads to riot against the whole situation. Then one day someone introduced me to a variation I’d never seen before (pictured here). This is still a very active posture. My feet are rooting into the earth as my elbows are helping to press against me inner thighs which helps to extend my spine. Back of the neck is lifted long to counter act the heaviness of the sacrum. I have a significant amount of trauma I hold in my lower back. I talk and speak about the Psoas Muscle often, which is often a source of many peoples unknown chronic pain. Think about the Psoas (the muscle that connects our top half to our bottom half) like a rubber band. If you were to loop that band over your index finger and thumb and then flex it you’ve got some great range of motion. However if you pinch that band with your opposite hand at any section and then try to stretch it, you significantly loose your ability to stretch this muscle. This is how many of our Psoas muscles exist... tight and with compromised mobility. It turns out because of the pain I’ve previously carried here, my body was actually unable to physically take the pose that so many teachers cue. I love sharing this posture variation with my tight hip, bad knees, low back pain yogi friends. This is the beautiful thing about this practice. We aren’t ever doing a pose wrong but sometimes a pose isn’t right for us right now. We get to find the postures that work for our bodies as we are. If you’re ever in a class and feeling the way I mentioned above about any posture, chat with us after practice. We love offering you something that we might not always think to teach in every class. Day 3: Show us your yogi squats today. Tag us in your stories!

Ventura Pop Up Yoga 07.07.2020

#VenturaYogaAsYouAre Tree Pose (Vrikshasana) Tree Pose, one of the most universally know poses in yoga. Over the years of IG we’ve all succumb to a tree pose post... no just me?... In those past post surely my foot would have been wedged up on my supporting leg, because that looks better in a photo and is better, right? I’ll let you decide what is better but here’s a little true story of my advanced yoga practice. Yes in the past I chose tree pose with my foot above my knee. However a few years ago a teachers cue lead me to find a mind blowing observation I often share in my own teachings. The teacher suggested that just for today let’s ALL opt for the foot on the ankle variation. On that day I realized that to me, where I was in my practice, that this option was actually more challenging. I kept loosing my breath and couldn’t balance and keeping my foot against my ankle was much harder than pressing it into my standing leg like I was used to. We’ve all likely heard a teacher say find your edge. Let me offer you a thought that came to me in this practice what if our edge isn’t the most advanced posture? What if muscle memory has taken the challenge out of some postures for us and the invitation is to actually challenge the mind by backing off Since this personal observation, I’ve spent the last several years opting for the posture options that I’m not accustomed to. I often find my edge in my practice where I least expect it. I’ll offer this invitation to you today: What postures/challenges are you missing out on because you’ve never tried their alternative? Keep in mind sometimes the greatest challenge or edge we find in our practice is actually the mind... For Day 2 entry, tag us in your stories sharing your variation of Tree Pose. Make sure you also tag and follow @barefoot.intuitive @aumvibe @thepharm.love At the end of the week @barefoot.intuitive is giving away 5 class packs. If you’re interested in challenging the mind in your practice a wonderful way to do that is in Yin Yoga... that slow down and the long holds are one of the biggest challenges on our mats. You can join @yoga_lo on Monday evenings for her Yin class.

Ventura Pop Up Yoga 28.06.2020

#VenturaYogaAsYouAre Day 1: Mountain Pose (tadasana) Today I’m sharing with you a standing variation. ... To me tadasana is the foundation of every other pose we do. Through that foundation we begin with our feet to explore this pose every time we come into it. Here’s a quick invitation for you to explore tadasana today, however and WHEREVER you are. In a standing tadasana spend a few minutes playing with the intricacies and micro adjustments with your feet. Visualize your most worn in flip flops. How does the impression of your foot lie upon those shoes? Your feet leave a mighty impression when you stand erect, but have you ever played with how you stand? Try this simple experience out and let us know what you get out of it! As you stand in tadasana play with bringing more weight to your toes (without lifting your heels). What happens to your belly? Your shoulders? Your breath? Now bring more weight to your heels. What happens to your chest? Your throat? Play with weight in your arch and also with the outside of your foot. Play with tadasana and see if you can find the equilibrium where your body feels most supported in this pose. Everyday may be slightly different but these are simple tools that we can lean into to begin to understand the subtleness of what our yoga practice has to offer on a grander scale. Doing this exercise can begin to bring awareness to our subtle body and how micro adjustments can leave a lasting impression on the body... just like those flip flops indentations. For Day 1 entry, tag us in your stories sharing your variation of Tadasana. Make sure you also tag and follow @barefoot.intuitive @aumvibe @thepharm.love (please join and tag us on Instagram to enter to win) At the end of the week @barefoot.intuitive is giving away 5 class packs. In the meantime join her Tuesday morning practice where she will be sharing more about the Yoga As You Are concept. Details and registration on the Wix app.

Appreciation Post: It seems hard to believe but there was a point a few years ago where I wasn’t sure I could keep going. I wasn’t sure how to keep pushing past some of the continuous obstacles of running an outdoor donation based yoga studio. Pop Up had taken a winter off and only hosted Sunday Soul... each of these ladies stuck around that winter and helped support and sub even though their weekly classes had faded. As March 2019 rolled around I knew I needed to make some ...decisions. I called up all 3 of these women and said you’ve been here even when I’ve been uncertain and if you can help me over the next month I don’t think we can let this fade away They excitedly JUMPED and dove in head first; scheduling, auditioning, mentoring and just generally nudging me forward. I’ve always known that this community was unique. That it was different. It wasn’t because of me... it’s always been way bigger than me. Knowing their devotion to this community sparked something in me that had been missing for awhile. It re-energized my mission and intentions. The past two years have been some of the brightest years of my life and of my businesses. I think back to those old thoughts. I know how tired I was, but I cannot imagine not having THIS in my life. I know we wouldn’t be where we are today without these strong women. I’m in this 100% but they’re always a text away when I’m vetting a new idea or need a different vision to approach the uniqueness of this business. Each of them have been intricately woven into Pop Up since nearly the beginning. Heather’s taught Sunday Soul since we formally launched in April 2015! Both Melissa and Michelle started as yogis in the park, attended our past teacher trainings and began teaching for us immediately after. It’s been a Wild year and we all caught up over brunch this morning. As we ate I admitted it’s hard for me to ask for help but somehow I think they secretly know this about me and have always been there ready and willing. So thank you Heather, Melissa, Michelle. You gals help keep this community thriving behind the scenes and I’m grateful for all the support you have provided over the years. Love you

Our August Newsletter went out today and we shared some new community resources with you. We wanted to take a moment to pause, connect, and continue to acknowledge the current climate we find ourselves in. To navigate the world right now amidst a global pandemic, major racial and social justice movements, and the general political upheaval that comes with an election year; we know that many of you may be feeling and experiencing energy, that both personally and communally fe...els unsettling and uncomfortable. . While a Yoga Asana (Movement) practice can be immensely helpful to ground and calm our nervous systems during this time; the Yoga practice of Svadhyaya (Self Study) is one that can ultimately serve to fully acknowledge these feelings as they arise and create the space to safely explore them, understand them, and ultimately grow from them. So, we deeply encourage the continued opening of the heart and mind to curiosity and connection within, as we continue to move through these immense shifts. . We would like to bring you into the recent conversations we've been having among our teachers and staff. You guys make me smile! . . Thank you for all the cooperation, patience and cute Venmo notes as we navigate life’s hiccups. I’m appreciative of this community that’s been built through our love of the outdoors and yoga. . .... As many of you who have known me over the years, you know I spend weeks on the road each summer navigating nature’s hiccups. I take off without much of a plan in order to listen more intently. To learn to navigate intuitively as I let the confines of everyday shift aside. . . Often times my journeys take me to remote places (yes mostly alone). Off the grid but more deeply connected than ever. This time provides me the vitality for the season and sometimes even year ahead. . . As I jokingly say I have a college degree, over 500 hours in yoga and affiliated teaching credentials... BUT nature is and always will be my greatest teacher AND healer. . . I share all of thus because as I return back from The Wild I return back to the buzz of life. I do so renewed and with a great appreciation for everything I come home to... even app glitches . . In a world where we desire instant gratification it’s a great reminder each year for me that sometimes we can get by with less... less noise, less stimulation, BUT that community is is thriving foundation for humanity. And I’m grateful for the ones that surround me and have kept us all connected in my absence. . Let’s get outside and move together! Currently working on the app as well as a location shift for this weekend due to crowding at Marina Park. Stay tuned . . Much love Jessy

Happy Intentional Yoga Day 108 Salutes to commUNITY. . .... Yoga is the union of uniting opposites. It asks us to inhale into challenges of a posture as we learn to exhale that ripple into life. . . It asks us to breath within the discomfort but to know our breaking point. . . It teaches us to look within for the answer that we are without. . . It invites us to shed so that we can grow, so that humanity can evolve. . . It reminds us that all beings are not only created equally but that we are all united as one through the heart. . . I have more questions than I have answers. I’m so grateful this past week that the Black Lives Matter movement created the invitation to listen. In such an action based society we often times miss opportunities to grow because we quickly respond, but in doing so we respond in the ways we’ve always know. Listening is the all too often forgotten form of communication that enables us to expand. For me this past week has been seeking out resources. I learn through stories, s...o I downloaded books, podcasts, videos and held space for friends to share their stories. I sought out guidance from my teachers. Many who were also in the midsts of trying to retune their ears. I realized I need to reach further and took to IG to find some POC yoga teachers. As I cruised #yoga and #yogateachers the whiteness of these hashtags was staring back at me. That’s when the questions began to swirl. . Why has it traditionally been only white women of the West that are passing on the ancient teachings of the East? . Why/How is yoga missing a bigger presence in the Black community? . And because I’m always thinking about the barriers to entry for this practice, what are the limiting factors that keep the POC audience from yoga? Time, money, intimidation... is what I’ve always felt kept people from this practice, but now it feels like there may be other aspects that I’ve been missing. It takes students to make teachers and somewhere the yoga community is missing this opportunity. . I don’t have the answers yet, but I’m a part of this and vow to continue to listen, evolve, and take action. Of course this spans much deeper than the yoga community but as far as this organization right now we’d like to understand how we can do better. . I’d like to extend these thoughts outward and offer up the comments section for our POC audience to share any thoughts and concerns of how we and/or the yoga community at large can do better. . In the meantime we’ve taken small actions and donated to the organizations we shared last week. Our conversations and involvement will continue far beyond this app but it felt important to be very transparent that we stand with Black Lives Matter movement. See more

Alright... which one of you manifested so hard that Monday’s actually went away for two months? . We are so so excited and proud to be in @visitventura. Watching our city come together to take greater measures for the health of our community as well as the well being of our local businesses. We’re always so proud to call this place home. . She joined us as a student nearly 5 years ago back in the days when we rented an old restaurant from the Harbor for our Winter Hone. She’s been a blogger for us. She shared in and certified through our first teacher training we hosted. She rose to be a wonderful and sought after teacher in our community. She even support us here in the Insta w...orld for the past year. You can learn oh so much more about her if you Pop Up to our blog. Link in Bio. . In the meantime Melissa takin over today. Have some fun! PC : @tylarharrison

Teacher Feature: Meet Heather Perry. She’s a Founding teacher with VPUY. . When I had this Wild idea to begin to create an outdoor yoga studio, she was right there with me. I don’t think either of us knew the wild ride we’d be on over the last 5 years but it’s been spectacular to witness the journey. .... Our Sunday class quickly became our flagship class. @heatherperry_yoga has held space easily for thousands of students over the years. She has this incredible way of making a class challenging, but not intimidating for sometimes up to 60 students a week (mind you all ages, all levels, often times several mamas to be). She leaves everyone with what they didn’t know they needed. . If you’ve been attending her weekly online Sunday Soul you know that Heathers been spending quarantine packing... as in moving! And even in the midst of the challenges moving brings, she’s bringing us something extra special today. . Join Heather LIVE here on IG at 9:30am.
