Venice Beach Music Fest

Friday, October 23, on KPCA-FM. I'm going to examine the years surrounding the Summer of Love in San Francisco. I'm going to do that using the recordings from a unique audio documentary created 45 years ago by the DJs and production staff at radio station KSAN. The documentary I’m referring to, called What Was That (Or Suddenly Lost Summer), was created in 1975, and was broadcast for 24 hours straight in January of 1976. I'll be playing portions of that documentary, toget...her with a phone interview with the show's producer, Bob Simmons, that I conducted just the other day. Dave and I had been playing open-mics for about a month or two under the moniker Greensky Bluegrass and we were starting have following of friends who would ...come to watch us play. At the end of the night we were approached by a long-haired hippy kid who said he had just got a mandolin and really liked David Grisman. He asked if he could come jam with us sometime, we said sure. The next day, I remember, sitting on front porch of my house waiting for Paul, who came skipping down the street, mandolin around his shoulder, wearing a hemp fedora with a feather sticking out of it. We jammed that day and we gave Paul some bluegrass CDs to listen to. We played at house party later that month on Halloween and became a band. We started playing regular gigs and needed a regular bass player. Nod to Ron Stanford, Dan Thatcher and Chris Carr. Devol approached us and said wanted to be involved in the band, he said he had a degree in Cello Performance , we asked him to learn to play bass, he did. Fast forward a couple years. We are on tour with a band called The Wayward Sons and we start jamming with their Dobro player, Anders, after gigs. Not soon after, he sends an email asking he could join the band and we obliged. He was the final piece of the puzzle and we’ve never looked back. Hard to believe its been 20 years. - Bont We look forward to celebrating this 20 year journey with you this weekend!
