www.velocitymotorgroup.com Porsche 918...... Flush as we are with nutty performance cars at the moment, we should remember that automobiles as quick as the Porsche 918 don’t come along too often. In 2008, the quickest (and fastest) production car we had ever tested was the Bugatti Veyron 16.4. It could hit 60 mph in 2.5 seconds and burn the quarter-mile in 10.1 ticks. The Porsche 918 crushes the original million-dollar car with a 2.2-second sprint to 60 mph and a 9.8-second quarter-mile time. To put that in perspective, 0.3 second is about how long it takes you to blink. As acceleration times shrink, their deltas become increasingly larger percentage gains, so the 918’s third-of-a-second edge over the Veyron represents an astounding achievement.

By the early 1960s, Ferrari’s racing and street cars began to diverge in basic essence, with the Scuderia’s competition cars quickly becoming more specialized and the road cars reflecting the growing demand among Ferrari buyers for more comfort and luxury. Debuted at Paris in 1962, the Grand Touring-oriented 250 GT Berlinetta Lusso of 1963-64 was quite similar in appearance to the outgoing 250 GT SWB (short wheelbase) Berlinettas of 1959-62, but outfitted with more luxurious ...and usable interiors. Designed by Turin’s Pininfarina, the Lusso’s sleek body was rendered by Scaglietti mostly in steel, with the doors, hood, and trunk lid made of lightweight aluminum. The Lusso’s chassis and engine were closely related to those employed by the competition 250 GT SWB and 250 GTO. The Colombo-designed 60-degree SOHC V-12 was only somewhat detuned for road use with triple, as opposed to six, Weber twin-choke carburetors and lower 9.2:1 compression. As installed in the Lusso, this engine was quoted at 240-250 horsepower at 7,000 rpm. Performance was excellent as expected, with Road & Track testers recording 0-60 acceleration in 8 seconds, the quarter-mile in 16.1 seconds at 91 mph, and a top end around 150 mph.

www.velocitymotorgroup.com Audi’s luscious R8 is beautiful to behold, easy to live with, and simply marvelous to driveall the qualities you could want in a supercar. All-new for 2016, this generation is more powerful than ever. The base engine is a naturally aspirated 5.2-liter V-10 that makes 540 hp; the V10 Plus makes 610 hp. All-wheel drive is standard, as is a seven-speed automatic. Only a coupe is offered for now; expect a roadster later in the year, along with either a turbocharged V-6 or turbo inline-five.

www.velocitymotorgroup.com The Aventador is brutally powerful and obscenely flamboyant, but it’s also surprisingly agile for its size, making it one of the most drivable Lambos ever produced. Simply because it’s drivable doesn’t make it easy to driveand therein lies its appeal. Available as a coupe (or roadster), it flaunts a 6.5-liter, 691-hp V-12 mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. For the ultimate, the Superveloce offers 740 hp.

www.velocitymotorgroup.com The SL63 was designed as more of a high-performance grand-tourer than an all-out sports car. It is powered by a hand-built twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V8 engine that pumps out 577 horsepower at 5,500 rpms and 664 lb-ft. of torque at 2,000 rpms. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a seven-speed automatic transmission that can be controlled by shift paddles mounted behind the steering wheel. The SL63 AMG reaches 60 mph from a stop in 4.1 seconds. An AMG-modified active sports suspension and upgraded brakes on all four corners ensure improved handling over the standard SL roadster.
