Tonight! Don't forget to come check out night one of recruitment. We're also hosting a second night on Thursday if you can't make it this evening. We hope to see you there!
Today VCDD honors and celebrates Juneteenth, the day in which Union soldiers entered Galveston, TX bringing the news of emanipation to enslaved Black people two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. We want to honor and highlight the work of Opal Lee, the 94 year old civil rights activist who has marched for years and miles to fight for this day to be recognized. While federally recognizing this day is a start, there is still much work to do. Fixin...g the wage gap, overturning voter suppression laws, teaching history through the lens of Critical Race Theory, reparations, police reform and much more need to be accomplished. On this Juneteenth, we honor the work of Black activists to bring equality. We encourage our friends, family, and fans to patronize Black owned businesses, donate to Black organizations, and continue to educate ourselves on the work to be done. None of us are free until all of us are free.
Have you always wanted to play roller derby? Now's your chance! Come see us at our rink on Tuesday and Thursday next week to learn all about our league and this wonderful sport. We hope to see you there!
We could not be more excited to start practices again! While we've missed the heck out of our beloved sport, we also know that the world isn't 100% ready to return to normal. We're taking extra precautions to ensure we are not only 100% comfortable on wheels before returning to contact, but we're also following local, WFTDA, and CDC guidelines before returning to play to keep our skaters safe. This includes: - We're fortunate to have our home rink outdoors at Freedom Park. Th...is outdoor environment will help prevent the spread of COVID-19 - Limiting practice to one hour twice a week from our normal two hour practices. - Social distancing during gear up/down and on the track. - Requiring that skaters who were exposed to COVID, or suspect that they have COVID, stay home in quarantine and test for COVID per the CDC guidelines. - Requiring that masks be worn in common areas, such as the restroom and in our gear up/down spaces. - Checking temperatures upon entry of practice. -Prohibiting the sharing of water or snacks as well as loaner gear until further notice. Stay tuned for more info as we progress through the reopening tiers. We can't wait to welcome you all back to our track when it's safe to host a bout.
"No Pride for some of us without liberation for all of us." - Marsha P. Johnson Here at VCDD, we are staunch allies and supporters of the LGBTTQQIAAP community. However, we understand that people of color within the community are disproportionately affected by hate and violence, particularly Trans BIPOC members of the community. Pride would not exist without Black queer activists and every day of the year we honor those who have fought for social justice for the marginalize...d members of the community. Happy Pride, everyone!
Guess who's back? Back again.....That's right, folks! VCDD is heading back to our home track at Freedom Park soon. Thinking about joining us? Stay tuned for more details! (: Bailey Clark)
