Community Leader Norm Roberts Dies: Woodland Hills resident and community leader Norm Roberts passed away at home June 12. Roberts was an active member of St. Mel Catholic Church, a published and award-winning attorney and committed community volunteer. He had been senior vice president and general counsel of Litton Industries in Woodland Hills, retiring in 1994. Previously he held the same position at Western Atlas, Inc. and Unova Inc. He was awarded the Los Angeles Bar Asso...ciation’s Outstanding Corporate Counsel Award in 1999, and the Gonzaga Law Medal in 2007. From 1959 to 1968, Roberts was one of three Administrative Law Judges for the U.S. Army European Board of Contrac tAppeals, with jurisdiction over all contact disputes arising from performance of government contracts with foreign contractors. While employed by the US government, he was appointed Chief Legal Advisor for U.S. Army Procurement in Europe and the Middle East and legal advisor for negotiation of multilateral international agreements among NATO forces. His community involvement included past Chairman and Board of Directors member of Premier America, a position he held until his death. He served on the Board of Regents for Gonzaga University, his alma mater, from 2001 to 2010. Roberts was Chair of the Public Contract Law Section for the American Bar Association, and chaired many legal and industry association committees.Trustees of Columbia West Hills Hospital and was a tireless volunteer for the Guadalupe Center in Canoga Park. He received the Mary Logan Orcutt Award from Catholic Charities in 2010, and received the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice Award from Pope Benedict XVI for his contributions to the building of the St. Mel Preschool and Activities Center, where he was a constant and involved parishioner. Roberts was extremely dedicated to his family and friends, mentoring his children’s and grandchildren’s education. He leaves a huge void in the leadership and oversight of St. Mel. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Rita, daughters Tracy (Chuck) Myall, Monica (Jim) Diamond and Debbie (Chris) Gregory, sister Merrily (Doug) Denton, brother Ron (Joann) Roberts and grandchildren, Jimmy, Alex, Mary, Brennan, Bryanna, Trevor, Sarah and Andrew. A rosary will be held Tuesday, June 19 at 7 pm at St Mel. The memorial service will be held on Wednesday, June 20 at noon at St. Mel Church. Interment will be private. LAPD Searches Chatsworth Home in Gavin Smith Investigation: In a new development in the case of missing local executive Gavin Smith, the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Missing Persons Unit served a search warrant on a home in the 8600 block of Santa Susana Place in Chatsworth on June 9. The owner of the home, according to real estate records, is Chandrika Wianta, who also owns a cafe in Beverly Hills. In serving the warrant, crime scene technicians collected bags of evidence and... moved throughout the house. A dog was used during the search. A black SUV was towed away from the house, although no arrests have been made. A $20,000 reward for information in the Smith case was announced shortly before the search warrant was issued. Smith’s family also have set up a website, FindGavinSmith.com, to aid in their search. Gavin Smith went missing after departing from a friend’s home in Oak Park on May 1. A sighting of Gavin Smith and a women at a restaurant in Morro Bay on May 7 was reported. Smith is aproximately 6 feet, 6 inches tall, white with green eyes and graying blond hair. He has a 4-inch scar on his right wrist and a 5-inch scar on one of his calves. The West Hills resident was a distribution executive for Fox who worked in Calabasas.
