Vallejo Education Association Announces Endorsements in District and Solano County School Board Races VALLEJO The Vallejo Education Association (VEA) is announcing its endorsements for the Vallejo School Board and Solano County Board of Education races in the November 3rd election. For the Vallejo School Board, the 600-member union has endorsed incumbent Christy Gardner and long time educator Dr. Latyna Young. This was not an easy decision, said Steven Quinlan, Politi...cal Action Chair of the VEA Our members talked with everyone who sought the endorsement of labor and at the end of our process, we felt that Trustee Gardner and Dr. Young would be the best candidates for us to support during this election cycle. Trustee Gardner and Dr. Young also received the endorsements of the Napa-Solano Central Labor Council, and the Solano Democratic Central Committee. The VEA also endorsed retired pediatrician Dr. Bonnie Hamilton for the Solano County Board of Education, Area 2, which represents areas in the northwest county incorporated area west of I-80 including portions of the cities of Vacaville and Fairfield and a portion of eastern Napa County. When asked for comment, retired teacher and Past VEA President, Sheila Gradwohl said Dr. Hamilton has been serving children her whole life. I look forward to her continued support of Solano County students. She will make an excellent trustee. The seat is currently held by Republican incumbent, Amy Sharp. The VEA also endorsed, unopposed and off the ballot candidate Teresa Lavelle for District 4 who was appointed to replace Trustee Mayrene Bates who stepped down. District 4 represents the incorporated areas of central and western Fairfield and the City of Suisun. Trustee Lavelle who will be serving her first full term remarked, I look forward to continuing the work required to ensure each child has the tools needed to thrive in our public schools and teachers are empowered to make it happen. State Superintendent Tony Thurmond yesterday hosted a webinar for district, school and county office education leaders to walk through new state guidance docume...nts released Tuesday, covering the areas of distance learning, special education, meals/nutrition services, and child care support. The documents issued by California Governor Newsom Tuesday were created under the March 13 Executive Order N-26-20 to address many of the immediate concerns that teachers, administrators, and parents are facing in the wake of COVID-19-related school closures. Despite having the fifth-largest economy in the world, California’s public schools lag far behind the national average in terms of staff per student, student-te...acher ratios, and overall funding per student. Your children deserve better they deserve a top-quality education in well-funded schools! The California Schools and Local Communities Funding Act of 2020 will raise billions in annual funds to improve public education but only if it gets enough signatures by April 14 to qualify for the November 2020 statewide ballot.
