Shortly after 11pm last night, the operator aboard this 57’ motor yacht put out a mayday call with his VHF marine radio advising they were hard aground on the b...each and in the surf just west of the Channel Islands Harbor entrance. Channel Islands Harbor Patrol (Ventura County Harbor Patrol) as well as resources from Oxnard, Ventura City and Ventura County Fire Departments responded to safely transfer the 11 people ashore. The vessel was on its way back into Channel Islands Harbor from Santa Cruz Island and reported in excess of 200 gallons of diesel on board. TowBoatUS Ventura immediately mobilized a salvage response by water and land to recover the vessel before any major damage or pollution occurred. The vessel was safely removed and returned back to her home slip.

As sad as disasters at sea are, there are always risks in everything we do. We must also reflect and be circumspect about such disasters. A little over a year ago one of the worst disasters in dive boat history occurred where 34 people died from a fire that erupted in the middle of the night aboard the Conception. A year later, there has been no clear evidence as to the cause. There remains some suspicion on the cause to which is what we must reflect. To all, our thoughts and prayers for safety to all! https://www.soundingsonline.com//investigation-finds-no-cl

Imagine living on an island ranch herding cattle on the grasslands, sandy beaches, and steep canyons of Santa Rosa Island. For more than 35 years, this was the ...experience of Jesus Bracamontes (photographed on right, rancher Al Vail on left). Jesus worked as a cowboy and ranch hand for the Vail and Vickers Company, which owned and operated ranching on Santa Rosa Island from 1901 - 1998. Bracamontes was born in Sonora, Mexico in 1925. He started working on Santa Rosa Island in 1952 when he was twenty-six years old, leaving and later returning to work on the island ranch in 1962. While on Santa Rosa Island, Jesus drove a truck called el Comando and enjoyed fishing along the shore. He would ride on horseback over the mountains to locations like China Camp, spending two or three nights there to check on the cattle. Bracamontes and his wife Virginia had six children who grew up on the mainland, spending summers on the island. When the children were grown, Virginia moved to Santa Rosa Island and stayed with her husband in the old schoolhouse. Jesus retired from island ranching, moving back to the mainland with his wife. Following Virginia’s passing, Jesus was rehired by Vail and Vickers, returning to Santa Rosa Island. With the removal of the last herds of cattle and the cattle operation ending on Santa Rosa Island in 1998, Jesus retired to Tecate, Mexico. A good article on fuel burn. Our prior boat was a 60ft SeaRay and we frequently ran her at 30kts. People often would express how that was such a huge fuel burn. I would explain that between 12kts and 30kts my RANGE was almost the same. You may burn less, but it would burn longer at slower speeds, thus a comparable range. However, if dropping the speed to 10kts, which brings the vessel into displacement mode, the range would double!

There is something special about tall mast ships! It is sad when one is lost. This one is close to us in California. https://www.soundingsonline.com//a-beloved-tall-ship-sinks
