It is never easy to see a person trying to survive on the street. Our reactions can range from pity, concern, anger, or choosing to not see this person at all. It is natural to feel helpless or uncomfortable when interacting with those that are less fortunate than us. If you are unsure of how to react, the best place to start is to acknowledge that homelessness is not always a choice. We advise practicing empathy while remembering humanity and treating all community members with dignity and respect while following your instincts. Your simple act of kindness - even just a smile - can positively impact another person's life.
